India signed a $5.4 billion deal with Russia in 2018 for the S-400 Triumph air defence system.

The U.S. opposed the deal, warning it could trigger sanctions under CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act).

Concerns were raised that the S-400 could compromise U.S. military tech if used alongside American systems.

India maintained its position, citing national security and strategic autonomy.

Deliveries began in 2021, despite global pressure, showcasing India’s independent defence policy.
