IMO, the biggest issue I have with all this discussion about Footsies and Neutral is that we actually have to stop pretending that Whiff Punishing is the be-all-end-all indicator of Footsies. It is an important facet of many games, yes, but it isn’t what Footsies *has* to be based around. It’s not what defines “good Neutral” in a Street Fighter.

They’re both using Shotos, Ken vs. Ryu. This is typically a match-up with the FINEST DISPLAY of Footsies.

The first Whiff Punish using a Normal Attack against an opponent’s whiffed Normal Attack happens at 4 minutes and 55 seconds. The *second* Whiff Punish using a Normal Attack against an opponent’s Normal Attack NEVER HAPPENS.

(Was watching on my phone, there definitely might have been ONE I missed, but that doesn’t change the point.)

What’s even more important is that neither player even GOES for Whiff Punishes against the opponent’s Normals. There are so many whiffs and no one even tries to Punish them. There’s maybe like 5 or 6 TOTAL ATTEMPTS in the entire 20 minute match.

Footsies and Neutral have never ever had some hard-defined set of requirements. There’s no way you can watch this match and NOT think it’s one of the finest displays of Footsies and Neutral ever. And yet Whiff Punishing Normals isn’t even on either of the players’ minds.

This is the same problem we display in the FGC constantly: we take what we personally enjoy and apply that as the rule that every other game must follow. Again, this leads to the bigger problem where Japan ends up stronger than us because they adapt themselves to the game that’s in front of them, whereas we keep trying to adapt the game in front of us to ourselves.

Stop trying to play what YOU think is supposed to be the Neutral and instead learn how to apply your strengths to the Neutral that you’re *supposed* to play in the game in front of you. Or just acknowledge that the game’s Neutral doesn’t suit your style and go play a game that does. But just because the Neutral doesn’t fit your style DOESN’T MAKE IT A BAD GAME.

People keep complaining the FGC is so negative. And this is why. It’s actually so maddening to me.
