We started a new project, investigating the possibility of environmental DNA as a means of detecting indigo snakes in the field. In Fieldnotes, Ben gives describes how we’ll test our results against other indigo snake survey methods.

Behold Jabba the Particularly Giant California Giant Salamander! This beast was likely suffering from dropsy for some reason. I find the poor thing gigantically adorable.

Absolute dinosaur caught on our Herpetology field trip today. Students were really excited to see a snapping #turtle this big up close. Cool to have an animal like this thriving on the @virginia_tech campus. @vt_cnre
2023 Spotted Turtle population monitoring is underway, and it's great to see some of our marked juveniles survived another year. I'm also taking Eastern Mud Turtle data, which means many attempts have been made on my life this week. I'm happy to report only minimal bloodshed.
Check out the rattle on this Eastern Diamondback! This large adult female had 17 rattle segments, which is one of the largest rattles we've ever seen on a wild snake. Snakes frequently gain and lose segments, so contrary to a popular belief, you cannot age a #snake by its rattle.

Working on my #SEPARC2023 talk this morning and getting a full research talk down to 5 minutes is not at all practical. Takes 5 minutes to just introduce the study.
