It's been tough finding a dark beer in London. Many breweries have stopped production for fear of wasting the stock or have started referring to stouts and porters as "seasonal beers". Thankfully @PortobelloBeer have come through with this sterling number, on our taps now

@oldmudgie We sadly have to reduce to 3 and with TT landlord as standard as well as a contractual fill that leaves only 1 guest. Also, finding a brewery risking a porter is oddly tough for this time of year...

One result of table service in pubs is that it will largely kill off the guest beer market apart from in specialist pubs. People will just order what they know the pub stocks.

@oldmudgie I'm sure any licencing officer would agree this is a reasonable exception. If a site has an issue with that, it would be because there are other legitimate reasons to penalise them. Regardless, there is an obvious societal issue in their operations that would to be addressed

@oldmudgie Just putting our hat in on that. We believe our environment is not suitable for children and that (regardless of our licensing restrictions) is endorsed by us. But if someone just wants to use the loo or needs water, we make exceptions. We are all human

@oldmudgie Ultimately the staff and pub suffer because of irresponsible parenting. The debate is so rife because this is a broad grey area. Most managed venues would prefer to eliminate the risk and build policies to do so

@oldmudgie So, we would allow children (if licenced so) at times that are relevant, such as a quiet weekend daytime. In other venues such as certain carveries or budget pub Co's, it would be questionable to bring children and get plastered, but it happens.

@oldmudgie Great if you are responsible adults. Unfortunately there are some that are not and defining that as a publican only occurs when it is too late. We are defined by our licence and have not contested it because we do not serve food...

Good news on the pub front: the Office for National Statistics reports medium and large pubs are growing in number. The ONS says the total number of pubs has risen for the first time since the financial crash of 2008. Bigger pubs report major growth in the number of people eating
