Mark first heard the Robyn Hitchcock song “Listening to the Higsons” in the 80’s and it was still a favorite when he recorded this version with Steve Albini in 2009. Thanks to @RobynHitchcock for his song and handwritten lyrics, which sit beside Mark’s artwork in the video.
Last month, the Sparklehorse estate announced ‘Bird Machine,’ a posthumous album that will be released on 9/8. Today, we share “The Scull of Lucia,” a quiet, intimate track featuring harmonies by @jasonlytle of @granddaddy
The finished results are instantly and unmistakably recognizable as Sparklehorse, with all the tenderness and sense of wonder that Mark shared so beautifully.
The careful and important work of archiving these recordings and bringing them to light was guided by his brother, Matt, who describes these songs as “honest and pure; and without pretense.”
