“Amargi” is an ancient Sumerian word. It’s the first recorded word for “freedom” in any language, but its literal translation means “return to the mother.” I learned this word in 2019 while reading Riane Eisler’s seminal work The Chalice and the Blade. The book’s central idea is that the “war of the sexes” is neither divinely nor biologically ordained. Instead, the violence which plagues our world is a consequence of a particular mode of social organization/thought which she termed the dominator model. She juxtaposes this way of life with another style deemed the partnership model. A partnership lifestyle is characterized by a more egalitarian social structure and a fruitful collaboration between both sexes. Most importantly, it’s a practice that centers the life-giving, nurturing values traditionally associated with sacred feminine energy, but which is ultimately available to everyone.

During the long recording process which stretched between 2021-2024, this word and its promise swirled around in my mind. Thematically, the album was always centered around feminine energies, rejection of hate, and a desire to turn tragedy into beauty -- like the alchemists once sought to turn coal into gold. But when my mother Debby Parker passed away in 2022, I knew it had to be the title of the album. Grieving her loss confronted me with the sheer size of her impact on my life. Debby adopted me, along with four of my seven siblings, as an infant. In a literal sense, she’s my second mother, but fundamentally, she’s the one who first set me on course for the life I have today. As a single mother of eight children, she was a living display of the partnership lifestyle that Riane Eisler describes. AMARGI is my way of honoring her. I hope the music conveys to listeners a semblance of the love she put into the world during her time here.
