One of the less-discussed transformations of the last decade is Bharat's rise as a Medical Tourism hub.

Look at the numbers 👇
-foreign arrivals for medical purposes:

🔹 2014: 1.39 lakh
🔹 2017: 4.95 lakh
🔹 2019: 6.97 lakh
🔹 2023: 6.35 lakh — a strong recovery after COVID-19

That means medical-purpose foreign arrivals were over 4.5× the 2014 level by 2019.

And the latest Economic Survey puts the longer-term transformation in perspective:

📈 Medical tourist arrivals rose from 1.12 lakh in 2009 to over 6 lakh during 2022–24, growing at around 12.4% CAGR — substantially faster than overall inbound tourism growth of 4.5%.

Medical tourism’s share of foreign tourist arrivals also rose from about 2.2% in 2009 to around 6.5% in 2024.

The Economic Survey notes that medical tourists generally have higher per-visitor spending and longer stays.

What changed after 2014?

The Modi Sarkar introduced e-Visa in November 2014, initially covering 43 countries.

Today, e-Visa facilities cover 167 countries, including dedicated:

✅ e-Medical Visa
✅ e-Medical Attendant Visa
✅ e-Ayush Visa
✅ e-Ayush Attendant Visa

The Government also launched the official Heal in India Medical Value Travel portal to streamline information and the international patient's journey.

And medical infrastructure is no longer limited to Bharat's biggest metros.

Special provisions were made for healthcare infrastructure financing in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, with major hospitals investing there and specialised procedures becoming available.

👉The Economic Survey estimates Bharat's medical-tourism market at approximately $8.7 BILLION in 2025, with an industry projection of $16.2 BILLION by 2030.

This is more than tourism.

It means:

~Foreign exchange coming into India
~Global demand for Indian medical expertise
~Expansion of advanced healthcare infrastructure
~Healthcare opportunities beyond metros
~Employment across hospitals, hospitality, aviation and allied services

From 1.39 Lakh medical-purpose foreign arrivals in 2014 to 6+ lakh in recent years, Bharat's Medical Value Travel ecosystem has clearly expanded.

E-Visa + e-Medical Visa + Heal in Bharat + healthcare infrastructure + Bharat's cost competitiveness and medical expertise = a powerful new pillar of Bharat's global services economy.
