World Cup referee Omar Artan has been denied entry to the USA, just three days before the tournament kicks off.

The Somali official was set to become the first-ever Somali referee to be the man in the middle at a FIFA World Cup.

Artan, 33, was elected the best African referee for 2025 by the Confederation of African Football and has officiated at Afcon.

Denied entry to the US, despite having a valid visa, he has now returned to Istanbul. #WorldCup

@HWestwoodP I think the back end of last season showed that hes useful, Gundo is useful, Bernardo definitely is but this is passing up a get out of jail free card and wilfully bad squad planning bc we don’t want to upset ppl. Can’t have them all + Rodri + the young midfielders

@HWestwoodP I think the reason people are always bigging up/defending Grealish’s treble season is because people are often questioning his legacy / impact at city. Stones for example isn’t questioned anywhere near as much (deservedly), so there just isn’t as much conversation (on here) on it

@HWestwoodP Who is that guy though? To me Reijnders & MGW represents a pretty solid effort at replacing the qualities of KDB/Bernardo/Gündogan. Not saying they’re as good but I struggle to see way better options other than Bruno G or Pedri, neither of which seem buyable. Even Neves too dear
