We surveyed lesbian, gay and bisexual people. 94% felt uncomfortable being categorised under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. 87% felt uncomfortable being categorised as 'queer'. Here's what they said - and what we're doing about it.

"As a lesbian I feel marginalised and like I don't belong in a community that used to be very important to me. I feel ostracised and isolated." "It feels like they jumped on our coattails but somehow managed to grab the steering wheel." These are verbatim responses from LGB people in our survey.

LGB stands for lesbian, gay and bisexual - people who are same-sex attracted. TQ+ covers gender identity, which is a distinct thing. Organisations that attempt to serve both often end up serving neither well - and in practice, tend to prioritise TQ+ constituents at the expense of LGB people.

In 2021, the government abandoned the aggregate term BAME following the Inclusive Britain report, which found it failed to reflect the differing needs of those it covered. LGB Alliance is calling for the same approach to LGBTQ+.

I welcome today's clarity in the Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance that single-sex spaces must be single sex, & that school records must accurately record every child's sex. Recording children's sex accurately in school is a measure we introduced in Government.

Labour were wrong to open the door to children as young as 5 socially transitioning, & the inconsistency in this guidance makes that clear. Children cannot be kept safe if teachers are encouraged to socially transition them & set them on a pathway that can lead to irreversible harm.

We will continue to fight for common sense. Referring to young children in a way that does not reflect their biological sex is wrong.
