YouTubers be like “wake up at 4am and run, that’s alpha!” No, it’s not. Look at apex predators; they’re all lazy. Bears hibernate, lions sleep all day. You know who wakes up at 4am and runs? Squirrels.
Now you see why people insisted on calling it Aadun. Look at this dull attempt to strip it of its origin and reduce it to just another “corn snack,” when it is culturally deeper than that and even predates the introduction of corn into Nigeria.
Aadun exists across Yorubaland with different flavours and variations. In Okunland, for example, ours includes beans, and my grandma’s special version even involves fried plantain. Traditionally, though, it was made with guinea corn flour and cowpea, both indigenous ingredients, even if corn flour substitutes are more common today. Among Yagba people, the guinea corn version still exists. It’s also one of the sacred foods used in twin celebrations, which shows for us Okun people it's actually a bean snack and very culturally rooted to us .
And even beyond that, the logic itself is dishonest. Tomatoes are not native to Italy, yet many iconic Italian foods use them today. Does that suddenly make those foods less Italian?
The most dubious part is the deliberate use of generic terms to erase cultural identity. Call Aadun a “corn snack” and suddenly it becomes something universal with no clear origin. The same thing happens when people reduce Gèlè to just “head tie” or Aṣọ-Ẹbí to simply “matching outfits.” The cultural weight and historical identity disappear.
Maybe now you understand why people insisted on calling it exactly what it is: Aadun.
Btw, almost all the materials and even actual textile procedures used in materials for head tie didn't originate from people that want to claim Gèlè.
Veekee James is not even in the country but see the excellent execution her team did on Simi’s traditional and White wedding dress.
She is indeed training generational top fashion designers
I hate what y’all do to Ayra Starr. She’s incredibly talented & successful. But because her sound hasn’t been “validated” by foreign market y’all downplay & discredit her achievements & label
We shouldn’t measure the success of our talents by the acceptance of the foreign market
You can spot the individualism of the average Nigerian from a mile away. It comes from the same line of thinking as “if you have money, you will enjoy Nigeria.” The focus is always on self-interest, with little thought for how the system as a whole can benefit.
Those people live off your worship.
Imagine if instead of “God When” in their comments, everyone started going...
“that your chain can feed all the beggars on my street for 5 years. Shame!”
“we don't have light because your daddy wants to pay for this your jet. Shame!!”
Then I feel like the problem is you people ARENT smart. We still think the wealthy have foundations solely because of the kindness in their heart or what???😭😭
