“Wise Guy”, the new Sopranos documentary on HBO is so so good.

My favorite part was easily the look into the casting auditions. They showed dozens of people going for Tony Soprano and it was blatantly obvious that James Gandolfini was the only choice. The tidbits into Loraine Bracco wanting to be Dr. Melfie instead of Carmella was super interesting. Bracco’s reaction to *the* episode was some powerful stuff.

It’s fascinating how little I knew about David Chase before this, but the documentary shows that The Sopranos, and Tony, is just a look into his life and his brain. The chaos and intensity of making the show, how he treated his actors and writers over the course of the decade was eerily similar to how Tony developed over the show.

I’m glad they spent so much time of one of my favorite episodes, “College.” Five episodes in is when I really fell in love with the show and the documentary just shows how that one episode changed TV forever. Tony killing someone (and showing it) paved the way for some of the best written anti-heroes (Walter White, Dexter, Barry Berkman) over the next two decades. The HBO executives didn’t want Tony to kill anyone because they didn’t want him to be hated, but the show would’ve never worked without it.

Everything about James Gandolfini was brilliant and heart-breaking. The stress of the role clearly morphed parts of Jim into Tony and even though it probably negatively impacted his real life, it made for the best acting performance ever. Gandolfini and Chase both had so much of Tony Soprano in them and that’s what made the show work.

It’s kinda crazy how the cast treated on-screen deaths like off-screen deaths. The impacts of killing off (no-spoilers here) were apparent to everyone involved with the show. No one wanted it to end and I can see why.

Now, time to rewatch the Sopranos (again.)
