Human rights and the ordeal of political prisoners must be part of the UK Govt agenda in high-level meetings with #Bahrain officials as the push for further releases continue.
On #InternationalDayAgainstTorture, we pay tribute to #Bahrain human rights defender and torture survivor Dr Abduljalil Al-Singace, imprisoned since 2011 for his role in the pro-democracy protests. His brutal torture was documented in Bahrain Independent Commisioner of Inquiry report where officers subjected him to nightly beatings, targeted his disability and verbally abused him. To this day, there has been no accountability for his abusers.
We demand his immediate & unconditional release.
He will complete 3 years on hunger strike to protect confiscation of his research & solitary confinement. Due to his hunger strike, he has low white blood cells while also suffering from complex medical issues including tremors, prostate issues, and shoulder pain. He also requires prescription glasses and new rubber tips for his crutches.
Authorities must end the systematic denial of medical care and return his research so he can end his hunger strike.
Bahraini political prisoners to be included in royal pardon issued by King Hamad today, Sept 4 2024...
As we get more information on the names and details of political prisoners who will be included in the release, Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, Advocacy Director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), commenting:
“While these releases represent a significant step forward, the best path for the country's future would be to release those imprisoned since 2011 for calling for democratic change. This includes imprisoned human rights defenders and opposition leaders Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, Abduljalil Al-Singace and Hassan Mushaima who languish behind bars only for exercising their fundamental rights. Their releases would turn the page on a dark era in Bahrain.”
