Welcome to:
The Umpire’s View 🎾
A newcomer’s perspective on tennis.
Learning the game through the stories of its legends,
the eras they defined,
why those moments still matter, and how the sport continues to evolve.
These guys get paid to commentate because they’ve lived the ins and outs of the tour.
Not computer warriors.
Yes they should do their due diligence (they do) but you surely can’t expect them to know every single player in the top 250.
Let’s be realistic, we’re human.
Whatever Zverev’s qualities and shortcomings may be, as a human being not as a player, one thing has been clear for years: he is extremely well-liked and respected by his peers. You can see it clearly in every handshake and in every speech, win or lose, his peers like and respect him across the board. Clearly he has earned that. That is something that counts a lot, perhaps more than anything else, in any field…
The sport never promised him a Slam.
Heartbreak in New York. A lesson in Paris. Questions in Melbourne.
He kept returning.
Not because victory was guaranteed, but because some players are built to endure what would break others.
Today,
Alexander Zverev Grand Slam Champion
Zverev playing too cautious, the nerves are settling in, the double faults more frequent.
We’ve seen this in his previous big matches. He can pull out, and go on to get that Elusive Grand Slam Title, but will he do it? Can he do it?
Not planning on watching today’s match, obviously.
I continue to confidently stand by my reporting and the work of my great editors and fact-checkers on those stories.
Thinking of everyone who remains affected by the issue of domestic violence and who also can’t watch today.
@christophclarey 2022 Rafa lives rent free in my mind. I genuinely, perhaps under illusion, thought he had a chance at winning the first 3 slams of the year.
