Thought I’d introduce what we’re working on.
We have a recently bought piece of land here in Algarve Portugal, close to the fine courses of Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura, and we have a big idea for what we want to do with it.
The plan is to build a golf facility that can be used all year round, by locals as well as people visiting the Algarve. But we don’t want it to just be somewhere you turn up, hit some balls and leave.
We want to create a place where golfers, sports fans, families and friends actually want to spend time: somewhere to practise, play, eat, have a drink, watch sport or just hang out.
We’re still early in the process and there’s a lot to figure out, so I’m going to use this account to document the whole thing — planning, design, building, mistakes, decisions and eventually (hopefully!) opening the doors.
I’d love to connect with other people in golf, anyone running golf facilities or ranges, and other businesses here in Algarve.
Let’s see where it goes...

How many rounds of golf per week do you think is necessary for improvement?
There actually is some data on this question of playing time vs improvement.
1 round per week is enough to maintain your current state but probably not improve.
1.5-2 rounds per week seems to be the sweet spot for improvement.
After about 2 rounds per week, improvement plateaus unless you become very deliberate about how you play and how you practice.
I've ran online businesses for 20 years now, many different websites, niches, apps etc .. you name it!
So why move into a physical, sport based businesses now?
Ai basically...
I think AI is going to disrupt almost every industry over the next few years, its started already with designers, coders losing out work. Saas apps have to be feeling it now, people can vibe code a project ina few hours.
Solicitors, accountants etc will start feeling it soon.
But AI can't replace physical experiences like watching and playing sport though.
There was a CNN article the other day about how billionaires now all want to own a sports team.
Sports team valuations are exploding and investors are looking at sport as a hedge against AI disruption. One sports investor recently described it as "the safest place to invest" because AI isn't going to replace it.
I think real-world experiences will be one of the least affected industries and will probably keep growing even more.
So let's see if I'm right lol
@thegolfbusiness The UK should work on fixing their water problem, leaks and reservoirs, it shouldn't be in drought every summer with the amount of rainfall there.
Tom Brown and Paul Rudovsky have done an amazing job of compiling data on golf design/construction projects the past few years.
I used the data to create an interactive site that shows where courses are being built/changed, who’s doing the work, and what stage of the project they are on
At The Els Club Vilamoura, Wayrobo and local partner Alvorada Tech deployed WayPick 2 on the driving range for real tournament-time ball collection - part of the company's wider push into the Portuguese and European golf markets https://t.co/U9HB5qSj01
Trafford Golf Centre, the UK’s busiest driving range, has said the demand for golf has been so strong in 2020 that it has increased the number of PGA professionals it employs from eight to 11
