I’ve watched a lot of stuffy, heavy and depressing movies the past 7 days, and Derek Cianfrance’s ROOFMAN was exactly the fun palette-cleanser movie I desperately needed to recharge my mental batteries. This movie was an absolute blast. Laugh-out-loud funny, charming and plenty of heart. It’s sure to be a big crowdpleaser. Channing Tatum brings both the laughs and the emotion to real-life escaped prisoner Jeffrey Manchester who hides out in a Toys R Us store. It might actually be his best performance to date. If you liked Linklater’s Hit Man, you’ll probably love this film. An actual contender for my Top 10 of the year and another delightful surprise from the #LFF lineup.

Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain is a Real Joy. Part familial dramedy, part road trip, part buddy-movie. Eisenberg and Culkin are terrific double act as a pair of Jewish cousins getting in touch with their ancestral roots in Poland. Like Culkin’s character, this a very charming watch. It’s a funny, heartfelt and cushy.
