I lived better in Texas on a $52k/yr position than I did at an $95k to $108k/yr position in California.

In CA I should’ve been living good, but was taxed 38-42% due to how much overtime I worked and paid nearly $40k in taxes bringing me to the standard median family income rate. My biggest return (single, no dependents) was $5800.

My rent was $2149, electric was $380 with constant voluntary blackouts and minimal deductions for times of non-service, and my gas was 2x as expensive.

A $4k return from my last CA filing paid for months of overhead in TX. Now I’m in the PNW back in the shitshow with a worse job market than anywhere I’ve ever lived.

Hate to say it, but veteran disability benefits is one of the largest fraud rackets in the country but it’s an ugly conversation. We gotta support the troops, but cooks and able-bodied people never on deployment getting to kick their feet up because of anxiety and “oh, uh, muh back” is twisted.
