Headingley Golf Club Review⛳️
Coming in at 11th in the Yorkshire rankings, Headingley Golf Club provides a superb test of golf just 15 minutes from Leeds city centre. I had the privilege of playing with a member, but visitors should expect to pay up to £110 for a peak summer tee time.
With legendary architects Harry Colt and Alister MacKenzie contributing to its design, Headingley blends heathland, moorland and parkland to create a varied and strategic golfing challenge.
The standout feature of the course is undoubtedly the collection of par 3s. Their varied designs, well-placed bunkering and exposure to the wind demand precise club selection and execution. None are particularly long on the scorecard, but they all have the ability to punish a lapse in concentration.
Standout Holes
Hole 7
The first of two par 5s on the back nine sits at the furthest point from the clubhouse. A well-struck tee shot threaded between the long bunker on the left and the trees on the right presents an enticing opportunity to attack the elevated green in two.
(Picture 1)
Hole 10
After grabbing a Cornish pasty from the halfway house, it's time to reset and tackle this 160-yard par 3. Well-positioned bunkers guard the green, while thick rough to the right eagerly awaits any tee shots that drift offline.
(Picture 2)
Hole 12
Listed as stroke index 2, but arguably the toughest hole on the course. Measuring around 440 yards, this demanding par 4 features imposing fairway bunkers and a hidden brook running through the fairway. Walk away with a bogey here and it feels like you've gained a shot on the field.
(Picture 3)
Hole 17
The standout hole at Headingley and one that perfectly showcases the quality of the course. At around 150 yards, the green is surrounded by six bunkers ready to collect anything slightly offline, while trouble also lurks long and right. It is a visually stunning and strategically brilliant par 3 that will live long in the memory.

Verdict
Headingley fully deserves its place among Yorkshire's top-ranked golf courses. The conditioning is exceptional, with beautifully maintained fairways, smooth and true greens, and excellent practice facilities. The halfway house is a welcome addition, and the clubhouse provides the perfect setting for a post-round drink.
Despite its relatively open appearance, Headingley requires thought and precision rather than brute force. Success comes from leaving misses in the correct areas and avoiding the strategically placed hazards that lurk throughout the course.
If you're in the Leeds area and willing to pay a premium for a high-quality golfing experience, Headingley should be high on your list. It is a beautifully presented course, steeped in architectural heritage and packed with memorable holes that will challenge golfers of all abilities.

Huddersfield Golf Club (Fixby Hall) Review ⛳️
I was fortunate enough to play Huddersfield Golf Club as part of a work golf day, enjoying nine holes in the morning before taking on the full eighteen in the afternoon. Whilst I was lucky enough to play through an event, September tee times are currently available from around £45, which represents exceptional value for a course of this quality.
The course is laid out around the magnificent Fixby Hall, which serves as the focal point of the property and provides a fantastic setting for a post-round pint overlooking the course.
Practice facilities are excellent, with a driving range, large putting green and practice nets available before heading to the first tee.
One feature that particularly stood out was the course starter, who took the time to share a brief history of the club, highlight key features of the course and offer some local knowledge on holes to watch out for.
Standout Holes
Hole 8
Playing around 150 yards, the 8th is a beautifully framed par 3 with a cluster of trees providing the backdrop behind the green. On the day we played, the pin was tucked on the back-right tier, making birdie only realistically available to those brave enough to attack that portion of the putting surface.
Deep bunkers guard the green and punish any lack of commitment, making the sensible play a shot to the centre and a two-putt par. It's a hole that demands precision rather than power and provides a memorable finish to the front nine.
Hole 12
A short walk through the woodland from the 11th green reveals one of the most scenic spots on the course. The 12th opens up to stunning views across the Yorkshire countryside and showcases just how well the routing at Huddersfield has been designed.
Playing as one of the toughest holes on the course, accuracy from the tee is critical. A valley waits to gather anything left, whilst thick shrubbery punishes misses to the right. Pars are hard-earned here and feel every bit as satisfying as a birdie.
Hole 18
For me, this is one of the best finishing holes I've played anywhere.
The drive is played over the pole marking the crest of the hill and, upon reaching the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views back across the course with the clubhouse sitting proudly in the background. A well-struck tee shot transforms the hole, leaving an inviting approach down the slope towards the green and providing the perfect opportunity to finish your round on a high.
Verdict
Huddersfield Golf Club is one of the finest courses in Yorkshire and has a legitimate claim to be among the best inland courses in England.
The routing is exceptional, the conditioning immaculate and the variety of holes ensures you're constantly thinking your way around the course. It strikes the perfect balance between challenge and enjoyment, rewarding good shots whilst never feeling unfair.
Perhaps most impressive is the sense of isolation. Despite being only a short distance from Huddersfield, the course feels completely immersed in the Yorkshire countryside, creating an experience that allows you to switch off from the outside world and focus solely on the golf.
The day was topped off with a steak pie and a pint of Moretti Unfiltered, which provided fitting pre and post-round refreshments.
If you're looking for a Yorkshire golf trip or simply searching for a top-quality round that won't break the bank, Huddersfield Golf Club should be high on your list.

Hollins Hall Golf Course Review⛳️
With rounds available for around £30 on a Sunday morning through GolfNow, Hollins Hall is a charming course offering amazing views across the Yorkshire countryside, including a great view of Baildon, another course I’ve previously reviewed.
It seems every time we play Hollins Hall, the elements are against us, with either torrential rain or heavy wind causing some inconvenience. However, a sign of a good course is one that remains thoroughly enjoyable despite the weather - and Hollins Hall certainly does.
One small addition that never gets old is the cart service up to the first tee. The walk up there will get the heart rate going and have you feeling tired before you’ve even teed off!
The course has a great mixture of forgiving par 4s and short par 3s, alongside longer par 4s and 5s that require strategy and different clubs off the tee.
Standout Holes
This was a tricky section to choose, as Hollins Hall has a number of standout holes. Overall, I think the back 9 is stronger than the front.
Hole 6 - A downhill par 4 shaped by the tree lines, requiring an accurate tee shot. With the green guarded by a small water hazard short left, a short iron into the green gives you a great chance of making a good score.
Hole 9 - One of the most interesting golf holes I’ve ever played, and I don’t think the camera does it justice. A 220-yard shot is required off the tee, before a steep drop down towards the green. Any wayward shots can quickly disappear into the trees.
Hole 13 - Another hole shaped by the landscape, offering an interesting test as a 160-yard par 3 straight down the hill. Picking the right club is a challenge, although coming up short allows the ball to roll down towards the front of the green.
Hole 14 - One of my favourite golf holes in all of Yorkshire. A proper risk-and-reward hole with the viaduct as a backdrop.
You can either try to drive the green, risking a lost ball left or dribbling into the water on the right, or lay up short of the hazards. Even then, an accurate shot is required to avoid the bunkers and brook running through the hole.
Verdict
Whilst I didn’t make use of it on this visit, Hollins Hall also has an 11-bay TrackMan range. Near the first tee there’s also a practice green and some nets to warm up.
The greens and tee boxes had recently been seeded, so unfortunately the course wasn’t in prime condition on this visit. That’s not a criticism of the course itself, and on previous visits it has always been in very good condition.
The halfway-house sausage sandwich also wasn’t my favourite… 🌭😂
However, Hollins Hall once again provides some of the best value for money in Yorkshire, combining great views, varied holes and a great pint in the clubhouse afterwards.
Overall, I’d have Hollins Hall on par with Baildon.

Baildon Golf Club Review ⛳
With Sunday tee times at just £28 including a breakfast sandwich and a post-round pint, there aren't many courses within 10 miles of Leeds offering better value for money. 🧵
Not only is it a great deal, but the course is consistently in excellent condition, with smooth fairways and well-maintained greens.
Accuracy off the tee is essential. Stray too far from the fairway and you'll find thick heather waiting to punish any wayward shots, turning a good scorecard into a long afternoon.
Standout Holes
Hole 2- A short par 3 framed by an impressive rock formation. Miss the green in the wrong spot and you'll be left playing a delicate flop shot up the slope to recover.
Hole 5- A driveable par 4 climbing uphill with a blind tee shot. The walk to the green is rewarded with stunning 360-degree views across the surrounding countryside.
Hole 15- A long par 4 running alongside the road. A well-placed drive leaves a downhill approach that naturally feeds towards the green and presents a great birdie opportunity.
The Verdict
The only drawback is the practice facilities. There's a short driving range, but it requires a walk down from the first tee, and there isn't a dedicated putting green.
That aside, Baildon is one of Yorkshire's hidden gems. It offers excellent value for money, unique character, and a genuine test of golf where strategy and course management are rewarded.
