graduate hiring in britain is in a doom spiral. kpmg cut its intake 29%, deloitte 18%, ey 11%. grad job openings are at their lowest since the pandemic. i see it in software too, i'm 29 and i've been the youngest in the room for years. ai does the grunt work now, so why pay a grad £35k to learn.

but a senior is just a junior who did the job for ten years. if far fewer people are getting those years, where do the seniors come from in 5? the current lot get promoted or leave and there's a hole behind them, in every profession at once. firms are booking their own future hires as a saving.

and ai doesn't cover it. someone still has to know when the output is wrong, and you only learn that by doing it yourself. the exact years being deleted.

Many years ago, I was a journalist. Then later in my career I used to reach Better Business Writing courses. All of the tips and tricks I gave people are now being called out as 'AI tells' and honestly, I'm kinda proud. You're welcome Claude, Gemini etc al.

@JasonCDaniels @GergelyOrosz Yep. Way before the pandemic I changed jobs so that I could be more available for a vulnerable, elderly parent. An incident made me realise that the two hour commute to the office put me even further away from him and that just wasn't worth it even though I loved the job.

I don't know who needs to hear this right now but: minimise your technical debt. Think about your enterprise architecture as you grow your business. It should go alongside your business plan. Yes, you should have one of those too.

@GergelyOrosz I'm not hiring right now but job seeking. Candidates want security (less willing to take a risk on startup/ scaleup companies) and remote/ hybrid/ flexible working - there is a big push to get people back into offices and more experienced, mature people just don't want to go back
