Hickman is doing his "move into the sticks and live like a king" bit but for incarcerated murderers. Corn meal, tang and salvation is all you need for life in solitary.
Honestly a stroke of genius and I approve the message
It's interesting to consider how "caloric post-scarcity" has to factor in on the death penalty question.
First, it stands to reason that creating opportunities for repentance is a fundamentally merciful act, and should be done if possible.
In a poor society with scarce energy, technology, foodstuffs, etc -- it would make sense that extended bouts of incarceration might constitute an unconscionable misallocation of precious resources. In those cases, the death penalty was probably a reasonable course of action for quite a few crimes.
And in fact, the poorer and more energy-scarce the society, the more often the death penalty would've made sense, even for fairly mundane crimes...
But in the richest society in human history by orders of magnitude, where caloric survival for a single human being is, in economic terms, a rounding error -- why NOT keep those who have done heinous crimes alive indefinitely, to either die a natural death or, more preferably, to repent and to take up the Cross of Christ?
The only reason incarceration is so expensive in the USA is because of ridiculous bureaucracy. There is not really any reason we couldn't do it extraordinarily cheaply.
Corn meal, lard, and Tang orange drink could keep somebody alive for many, many years. The US also has many uninhabited islands where prisoners could be kept insanely cheaply; all it'd take is a USCG security detail to patrol them. Use passive geothermal tunnel-tubes to keep concrete block bunkers at 45f all winter. Make prisoners do 100% of the maintenance on buildings with the absolute cheapest materials possible, as the Russians do with some of their modern penal colonies. Provide the absolute most basic level of EMT care and nothing else. Allow Priests to station themselves on the islands for the care of souls.
It would not be a fun existence. It would largely be miserable. But because it could save the souls of criminals from hell (as Christ did for Saint Dismas on the day of His Crucifixion), and because it could be done VERY cheaply if we wished -- why not do it?
Why insist on killing criminals when we have an infinite supply of calories, cheap concrete, and uninhabited islands where they could be kept dirt cheap?
If we were constantly on the edge of famine, this might be a different matter entirely.
Don't for a second buy the rationalization that this is an important and necessary step towards deterrence. Just look at the leadership and enthusiasts. It's obviously a surrender to the thrill of power and violence.
Our brains are so cooked by postmodernism & shitty human-made cut up method "art" that people look at this and think it's some kind of great aesthetic achievement instead of just a mashup of ironic cultural images in motion. AI can make wacky random images move, I'll give it that
βYou made nothingβ is cope.
We write the script, storyboard the shots, design every prop, every set, the costumes, the hair & makeup, light the shots, block the actors, operate the camera, add SPFX & VFX.
Prompting is a microcosm. This is simply a new tool for animated film.
@a_musingcat They don't even have to be conscious. They just have to convince people that they are , which is a lot easier. That's where the threat lies because the danger is always what we do to ourselves
@burnt_jester@RandolphCarterZ Just because a person doesn't detect it doesn't mean there isn't a difference. Differences pass under our nose all the time
@malcolmguite A prayer for your quick recovery. I'd forgotten i had seen you'll be in Boston next month. That conference is tempting. I imagine you know, but you must stop by L. J. Peretti's, the oldest continuous tobacconist shop in the U.S. that still blends their own stuff in-house.
