Now that we’re past the 20-game mark I figured I share my updated ‘Prospect Rankings’
Predictably, a lot of movement as we familiarize ourselves a bit more with these kids. Their strengths, weakness, where their game is relative to their projections.
Reading the chart:
The yellow slider indicates a player’s projected ceiling (1st line to 4th line for forwards) and (1st pairing to 3rd pairing for defensemen)
A few notes:
Georgii Merkulov — 25 is hardly considered a prospect. Unfortunately, this was the deciding factor in dropping Merkulov off the rankings altogether
Fraser Minten — The trajectory tells us he’s never seeing another bus to PROV again but he’s still super young and you never know what the grind of the NHL will bring. I predict he graduates permanently on the next update
Dean Letourneau — Skyrocketed up the rankings, and for good reason. Last season was a nightmare. Caught about 8-9 BC games and he looked like the Bluetooth was turned off most of the time. What a difference a year makes. He’s dominating his shifts even when it doesn’t result getting on the scoresheet. I get the sense this is only the beginning.
Oskar Jellvik — Remains a talented prospect who can skate with great vision. Injuries the last calendar year has really limited his development. Still worth keeping an eye on for PROV once BC season is done — pending health.
Biggest Risers:
Dean Letourneau +15
Kirill Yemelaynov +6
Christopher Pelosi +5
Biggest Falls:
Loke Johansson -5
Oskar Jellvik -4
Rankings Debut:
Cole Chandler
Brett Harrison
Elliot Groenewold
Jonathan Morello
Dismissed:
Georgii Merkulov
Riley Duran
Ty Gallagher
Let me know your rankings. Who are your risers? Any surprises?

There is going to be some interesting decisions in BOS.
I’m team #PlayTheKids
I know Mittelstadt and Zacha have both received a vote of confidence early on from Sturm but it’s obvious there’s a move there to be had, if needed.
Beecher is another guy I have been wondering about for a year now — has the tools of an NHL’er but just doesn’t put any of it together for any length of time…consistency is a big issue with him.
Blumel, early on, looks like a player that can help you in the middle-6.
Lysell looked good vs WSH. Made good decisions while playing his uptempo speed game.
First healthy summer for Poitras who had a tough first couple of shifts but ended the game really strong — Sturm is already giving him the inside edge by opening up the opportunity to play the wing if it comes to it.
Locmelis may be bound for PROV but his game is so damn mature right now that you have to label him as the ‘Dark Horse’ to steal a spot.
If it’s going to be a down season at least play the kids and make it exciting.

Shana Tova: A New Year brings New Hope
As always, I picture a world where people are free to pursue their dreams in peace, safety and security…no matter where they come from or what they believe.

Fill the roster with kids — have them learn on the job.
Zadorov, Pastrnak, and McAvoy will have to play big roles on the ice.
I don’t see a lot of benefit of filling holes with vets.
Make a decision on Zacha or Mittelstadt…or both.
If you’re going to suck at least be entertaining.

I attended the game last night — here are some thoughts:
🏒Matej Blumel — sneaky wheels, has a quick release and a heavy shot. Liked his high energy and battle, BOS may have something there.
🏒 Mason Lohrei — He’ll be 25 this season, I am starting to wonder if it’s become “what you see is what you get” with him at this point. D-Zone is still an issue and his offense doesn’t quite make up for the deficiencies.
🏒Morgan Geekie — Definitely had a shoot-first mentality. If he can settle into his new role he can flirt with 30 again. Underrated IQ, his ability to think like a center but shoot like a legitimate goal scorer will pay dividends.
🏒Fabian Lysell — The Swede did not get on the score sheet but he was engaged and assertive. Nice to see him make better decisions on the rush without limiting his offensive instincts. He should be getting a long look in camp.
🏒 Viktor Arvidsson — If healthy, then BOS may not be as bad as people think. Buzzed in the offensive zone and had no problem making plays or getting shots off. PP was unproductive but it should be better than last years.
🏒 Victor Soderstrom — He’s listed at 6’0” but, that may be on skates. Plays fast, head up, not afraid to make plays. D-Zone a little shaky. Not familiar with his game, we’ll need to see more.
🏒 Frederic Brunet — Probably BOS’ best D. Played a clean game, good on breakouts, solid defensively. A totally different player than when he was drafted. Has had to reinvent himself a little bit which porobably has hurt his offense but all-around a better player. Former 5th-rounder may have a role in the NHL soon.
🏒 Fraser Minten — As advertised, just an all-around good smart hockey player. High hockey IQ, very good defensively, and probably has another gear offensively. Definitely a candidate to push for a bottom-6 role.
🏒Simon Zajicek — Very impressive. He challenges shooters and made a highlight reel save in the second period. Outstanding season for HC Litvinov last year. Seems like a nice roll of the dice for BOS.
🏒Mike DiPietro — Not the start he wanted coming off an excellent year in PROV. Shaky, seemed like he was guessing instead of being instinctive. Just one game, but it could hurt him in his bid for backup.
🏒 Matthew Poitras — Nightmaraige first couple of shifts for him and his linemates. They settled in and were pretty dangerous the rest of the game. Poitras drew two penalties — had a slick inside move in the slot that resulted in a knee-on-knee and PP. Coming off his first healthy summer BOS is going to give him a long rope to lock down a legitimate top-6 role.

One of Boston’s favorite character guys goes home
Boston will always root for Jakub Lauko!
Always felt he had a little bit more to give— going overseas should give him that opportunity and confidence boost
