The reason why govts across Europe - by no means just in Britain - talk about preparing for a war with Russia is because our intelligence services are getting signals that Russia might be preparing for a war with us. Last time they issued such warnings - namely that Russia was likely about to invade Ukraine - many people laughed it off as well, until it actually happened.

Is Putin capable of overunning Europe? No, that seems highly unlikely given his performance in Ukraine. But the only thing that matters is what Putin himself believes he is capable of. And there are other scenarios possible besides a continent-scale invasion - like a limited incursion mixed with nuclear threats. The buttom line is: if Russian troops cross into one of the Baltic states, we are at war, whether you like it or not. It certainly would not hurt to be prepared for such a possibility.
