Remember this one below ? Well, Stephanie Efthymiou who obtained a grant in July to try OGM at University College Hospital, London, UK, is today one of a cohort of scientists from Holland, India, Italy, and the UK, who publish a paper titled :

"Optical Genome Mapping for the Molecular Diagnosis of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy: Advancement and Challenges"

where they compare OGM in the diagnosis of Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), the second most common dystrophy in adults, compared to the current SOC traditional techniques of Linear Gel (LGE) and Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). The study was on patients in the UK and India.

The conclusion could not be more clear cut, positive, and definite : OGM can be used to deliver a diagnosis for people with FSHD, including complex cases missed when using LGE SB.

Note, this is not the first time OGM is compared to SOC in FSHD - it has been done before and each time OGM is a clear winner. Bionano Labs has an offical LDT for FSHD, and Medgenome in India uses it commercially for the diagnosis of FSHD in India. But this is the scientific world and, as with all new technologies, individual countries, sometimes, individual medical centers, want to validate the technology for themselves, so will duplicate studies made elsewhere in the World. Often, also, these studies are needed to justify the purchase of the new technology.

OGM furthering the understanding of Epilepsy.

Researchers at the Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, and the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill publish a paper titled :

"Post-zygotic rescue of meiotic errors causes brain mosaicism and focal epilepsy"

The paper is published in the Nature journal and is behind a paywall. However GenomeWeb have published today a publicly accessible summary of the study (see below).

In this paper the scientists, revisiting 196 patients with modern genomic technology (long read & OGM), present evidence that Focal Epilepsy can be caused by an extra parentally derived mutation hitherto undiscovered because the mutation is only detected in brain tissue and not in blood or buccal cells.

Bionano's OGM helped discover this mutation.
