Yes we are very egoistic.
You know why.
A couple of weeks ago, I cut up a pregnant woman, met a ruptured uterus, brought out the life baby , repaired the womb, and sewed everything back up neat and nicely.
The second day, she was on her feet walking.
And that's just me, I'm a kid compared to other.
Dr Ose literally puts in probes and rods in people and fixes problems you can't even imagine.
Neurosurgeons can literally cut out the part of the brain that you used to type this tweet.
And yes, they can do it while you're awake.
CT surgeons and interventional cardiologist operate on a heart that is beating. That's like a mechanic working on a car with the engine running.
So yes aunty.
We are very egoistic because when we are not around, people die.
If you're not around, the only thing that happens is reduced revenue.
Do am if e easy.
You need to see the joy on olodos' faces when a very academically sound person doesn't succeed in life. They relish it. It's almost as if it gives them more reasons to talk down on education and intelligence.
When we were graduating, after I finished as the top student in my class, many of my coursemates were really eager to see how I would turn out. In fact, I would always hear them gossiping: "No be by Best Graduating Student. To make am for life no be by acada. Street na military. We go see."
I'm glad I turned out really well. Even most of those who went to Ghana for "updates" after school and eventually resorted to fraud can't measure up to my accomplishments. Till today, many of them still randomly call me and jokingly ask, "Senior man, you just dey chop dey go. You no wan give men update na!"
Deep down, they genuinely believe I must be secretly involved in fraud. This is the society we live in, where many young people have come to believe that you can't succeed legitimately, and that every young man who is doing well for himself must be involved in fraud. Even many elderly people and police officers aren't exempt from this line of thinking.
I haven't seen a country that is trying so hard to make education unattractive like ours.
"School na scam."
"No be by BSc. You get BTC?"
"Education is the key to success. Oya, use the key start Benz na 😂."
"Lecturer pack 1999 Camry, student don pack Lexus beside am."
If we continue this way, in a few years, there will be nothing left of our educational system. We are so money-centred that we don't even realize education can be an end in itself and not necessarily just a means to an end.
Everything has become, "How much do you have in your account?" or "Use your intelligence buy Benz na."
This is one of the reasons it really hurts me to see highly intelligent and brilliant people end up poor. I'm always rooting for academically sound people to succeed because I genuinely want people, especially young people, to see that you can make it legitimately through hard work and academic excellence.
Any society where only the olodos become financially successful while the brighter minds, the ones who believe in due process, continue to struggle is a society that is bound to fail.
🇳🇴🤯 A remarkable World Cup coincidence: in 1994, Erik Thorstvedt, Alf-Inge Haaland and Gøran Sørloth were part of Norway’s squad at the World Cup in the United States. Thirty-two years later, at the 2026 World Cup in North America, their sons — Kristian Thorstvedt, Erling Haaland and Alexander Sørloth — are representing Norway on the same stage.
There was one girl in my secondary school, who was always first in every single subject she offered.
Every other person basically fought for 2nd and 3rd position because 1st was already taken.
The only chance you had of coming first was in subjects she wasn't offering; French, CRS, Food & Nutrition and the likes.
It's been 19 years since we left secondary school, and Mariam Yinusa (now Shiru) is still maintaining that same academic excellence.
Just thought to give her her flowers!
I’m a muslim first and last. All other things are embedded within. Whatever ISLAM negates from yoruba culture is not permissible for me, and whatever it allows or encourages from it, i accept.
Just as my parent birthed me as a MUSLIM, May i breathe my last as a MUSLIM🤲.
A lot of my friends won't like this, and that's OK. I love you guys.
When we were in school, we were taught that doctors are the leaders of the medical team.
I held that with a huge sense of responsibility and privilege.
But somewhere along the line, I found out that everyone started clamouring for equal authority without the same degree of responsibility and accountability.
The stakes are simply not the same across board, and pretending otherwise hasn't helped anyone, at least, not our patients.
Medicine being called a “noble profession” has been used for years to guilt doctors into accepting burnout, underpayment, and terrible working conditions.
Medicine humbles everyone. The senior who terrorized you in MBBS is your co-PG today. The junior you ignored is your senior tomorrow. The patient you dismissed teaches you the most. Be good early, the system has a long memory and a longer queue. Be good, Do good.
In Urology, I saw men who were sad that they have to come change suprapubic catheters always.
I saw men who were sad because we had to put hands and biopsy needles in their anus to collect tissue.
I saw men who looked at their children with sadness because they got their diagnosis of prostate cancer.
I saw men who had to go around with urine bags because the couldn’t control the sphincters no more.
I saw men who dropped tears because we had to pad their boxers with tissue to absorb the blood that comes out after the biopsies.
I saw daughters who constantly begged to stay away and not see their father’s nakedness. Some even begging us to help dress the man up.
I’m surprised that despite all these, someone else saw differently.
