1/20 Hello everyone. It’s generally accepted that Dragon Ball Super is the truest sequel to DBZ, but in reality, that’s a myth. Even the DBZ movies are closer to the original than this sequel.

20/20 As a bonus, I want to mention that Toriyama considers DBS to be a "loose continuation" rather than a direct sequel.
Naturally, these aren't all the retcons and not all the reasons to consider DBS far removed from DBZ.
19/20 In DBS, he starts harping on about pride and Saiyan nature all over again. Why? Furthermore, in the DBS manga, Vegeta repeats that DBZ moment 1-to-1, but now it's framed with cool, edgy words instead of childish behavior.
18/20 Later in that same saga, Vegeta realizes he was wrong: he needs his family, and pride is his enemy. He sacrifices himself just to match Goku's heroic deeds, accepting himself as an immoral jerk rather than a hero to his loved ones.
17/20 Vegeta's Development:
Yes, this deserves its own point. In DBZ, Vegeta said he didn't need a family, that he feeds on pride as a true Saiyan Prince. But the whole point of that scene was that Vegeta was acting like a child.
16/20 Like a petty, offended little girl, Vegeta refuses to do the Fusion Dance. Seriously? Vegeta, you admitted that Goku is forever number 1, stop pretending like you're still rivals 😭
15/20 Vegeta admits that Goku is the strongest: "You are number one." Vegeta finally respects Goku. And what about DBS? He whines and tries to compete with Goku, he treats him with disrespect, he's even ashamed of him.
14/20 it pained him to realize he let people die during the fight with Buu, even though he knew he would resurrect them with the Dragon Balls.
Vegeta...
In the final battle with Buu, Vegeta admits that Goku is a genius when it comes to power and training.
13/20 No, seriously, Goku in DBS unironically suggests risking the entire multiverse just for a fun fight. In DBZ, Goku suffered morally when seeing a threat to even a small group of people;
12/20 In DBD (Dragon Ball Daima), they used this to undo the fusion of Supreme Kai and Kibito. And Daima is made by Akira Toriyama personally.
Character Personalities:
At the end of DBZ, Goku is shown to be smart and calculating. In DBS, he is impossibly stupid.
11/20 I should also point out that Vegetto didn't defuse in DBZ because his time ran out. It was explained to us: inside Buu's body, there is a special atmosphere that cancels out the fusion.
10/20 Moreover, Old Kai fused with a mortal himself — an ugly old witch, which is why he has that bizarre appearance. He fused with a mortal and it didn't wear off after 1 hour. Think about it.
9/20 But that misses one detail: the experienced, wise Old Kai didn't know about this condition either. He isn't a rookie, he knows a lot — why did he himself say there was no limit?
8/20 Second: This retcon ruins Potara even more. Now, the earrings have a 1-hour time limit for mortals. Why wasn't this mentioned in DBZ? Simple—Universe 7's Kaio Shin was "inexperienced" and foolish, so he didn't know the nuances.
7/20 Potara fusion, on the other hand, is a special property of an artifact that can't be replicated. The artifact is unique, more convenient than the dance, and requires no conditions. Yet, in DBS, they are declared equal in power and capabilities.
6/20 First: It’s stated that the power of a Potara warrior is equal to the Fusion Dance, even though DBZ clearly states that Potara vastly surpasses the dance. This made sense: Fusion Dance is just a regular alien technique that any living being can use by doing a simple motion
4/20 So maybe King Kai's status is just too low and he wasn't worthy of God Ki? Wrong again—he could sense Beerus's Ki at the beginning of DBS.
Potara Earrings:
In DBZ, the Potara are presented as an artifact of the gods themselves, the highest beings (at that time).
3/ God Ki:
The original story never mentioned a second type of Ki that only gods possess. You could argue that the plot just doesn't bring it up; however, Goku used Instant teleportation on divine beings like kaio. To use this technique, as we all know, you need to sense the Ki.
2/ I don’t mean that Super is trash (although I do think so, but you have the right to like whatever you want). I just disagree with how the fandom portrays this series as some kind of masterpiece.
Naturally, it all comes down to retcons, and there are a lot of them here.
