The Income-Tax Department has taken action by sending intimation notices to 22,000 taxpayers for discrepancies in their tax returns for the assessment year 2023-24. Here's what you need to know:

Who Received Notices?

-12,000 notices went to salaried taxpayers with discrepancies exceeding ₹50,000 between their claimed tax deductions and department data.
-8,000 notices were sent to Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) filers with income disparities over ₹50 lakh.
-900 high net worth individuals (HNIs) received notices for disparities exceeding ₹5 crore.
-1,200 trusts and partnership firms were notified for disparities over ₹10 crore.

Why the Notices?
The primary data analytics uncovered irregularities in the income declarations, expenditures, and bank account details of approximately 2 lakh taxpayers. These discrepancies were identified in comparison to data collected by department through bank and UPI transactions.

What's Next?
This is the initial intimation notice stage. Taxpayers have the opportunity to respond and clarify the disparities. If there is no response or clarification, a demand notice may follow.

What You Can Do:
Taxpayers can either pay the due tax with an updated return (including interest) or provide a detailed explanation. Some taxpayers failed to include capital gains, dividend income, or information about their other bank accounts.

Ongoing Analysis: A more detailed sector-wise analysis is underway for corporates, trusts, partnership firms, and small businesses. The digitization of the economy has made tracking tax evasion easier, and future efforts will focus on improving data accuracy and comprehensiveness.
