Before you embark on your January fasting, we want to share the true essence of fasting with you.

While many believers fast, they often miss the full scope.

If your usual fasting routine involves food deprivation, a brief prayer, and then breaking the fast, there's more to consider.

Food and water deprivation is a valid form of fasting, but it's not the entirety.

Fasting is about starving your SELF to humble it before God—emphasis on SELF, not just your belly.

Let's explore what scripture says about fasting:

An unconventional example is the pagan king Darius in Daniel 6:18.

He fasted not only from food and drink but also from entertainment during a time of distress.

"Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him." (Daniel 6:18)

In Jonah 3:5-6, the Ninevites, from the greatest to the least, proclaimed a fast.

Besides nutritional deprivation, they humbled themselves by exchanging royal robes for sackcloth, symbolizing a surrender of self-exaltation.

"The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth."

"When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat down in the dust." (Jonah 3:5-6)

Another example in Psalms 69:10-20 shows that fasting starts with abstinence from nourishment but delves deeper into depriving the SELF of desires like recreation or entertainment.

"I humble myself by fasting, and people insult me;
I dress myself in clothes of mourning, and they laugh at me." (Psalms 69:10-20)"

So, when you fast, abstain from food, but don't forget other things that feed your SELF—immersion into non-godly music, movies, literature, excessive social media, anger, arguments, gossip, and pride.

During your fast, consider staying off unnecessary media. Empty your soul through fasting, and fill it with godly things—more prayer, more word, more sermons, more evangelism.

May the God of peace be with you as you fast. Amen.

By faith, we know that God hears us and that he knows what we ask and that he'll answer us at all

As you read, Study and Meditate, and jot down things you've learnt

Then pray that for everyone who's not yet saved. Ask that they receive faith to believe that Christ is the saviour and that they be led to salvation.
