The Ministry of Ayush self-proclaimed that Ashwagandha is safe for use, based on an underpowered study on 80 (40 males, 40 females) participants who were all healthy volunteers.

This post is exactly what is wrong with scientific temperament in India. The shameless alternative medicine industry and its regulators use "scientific words" based on low-quality, poorly designed trials to mislead people from reality.

One, the study is not designed to assess safety. Even though randomized controlled trials are the principal means of establishing the efficacy of drugs, these trials are limited in size and duration and exclude high-risk populations. They have limited statistical power to detect rare but potentially serious adverse events in real-world patients.

Two, the study is done in healthy participants. Healthy people do not require Ashwagandha. In fact, no one requires Ashwagandha because it has no clinically relevant benefits identified, but potential, serious adverse events in real world patients are increasingly reported.

Three, there seems no point in looking at "safety" of a herb/supplement or drug, when it has no conclusive benefits. And when its mechanism of action remains unknown. It is akin to trying to find the highest speed at which a car can go without wheels.

Ashwagandha has not been identified for any clinically-relevant benefits and is currently useless for any disease condition. It also has the potential for adverse events, because of which developed and scientifically progressive countries are looking at banning its use as a dietary supplement.

Four, the current study, endorsed by India's apex pseudoscience organization, in a journal that publishes third-rate pseudoscientific content, without realistic methodological prowess, involving cherry-picked participants who are unlikely to be harmed and for a duration which is quite small to detect major adverse events is like Ashwagandha only.
