Edler and Hertz first wanted to find the right frequency: one powerful enough to penetrate tissue but precise enough to produce clear images. Hertz landed on 2.5 MHz, and early tests on excised hearts confirmed that the boundary between muscle and fluid could indeed be detected.

Echocardiography was born when cardiologist Dr. Inge Edler teamed up with biophysicist Dr. Carl Hellmuth Hertz to test sonar technology on humans. Their goal was to make quantitative analysis of mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation by non-invasive means.

Subcostal View 101 🔍
Place the probe just below the xiphoid with the indicator at 3 o’clock, flat against the abdomen using an overhand grip.

Why it matters:
– Best view for spotting ASD or PFO
– Critical for assessing cardiac tamponade
– Ideal for measuring RV wall thickness

🌀 Echo is younger than you think!

Echo has only been around for about 70 years.

In 1953, Dr. Edler and physicist Carl Hertz borrowed a sonar machine used to find cracks in metal—then used it to image the heart.

It worked! The first M-mode was recorded, and echo was born.
