Digital museum of the National Girls 🥎 (later ⚾) League, 1944–1954. Preserving a lost chapter of women’s sports history. Curated by Adam Chu (@AAGCIII)
Happy #WorldSoftballDay! Founded in ‘45, NY’s American Girls Softball League was 1 of 3 major women’s 🥎 leagues of the ‘40s. In ‘49, it transitioned to ⚾️ & became the American Girls Baseball Conference, making it the 2nd women’s league to switch from 🥎 to ⚾️ after the AAGPBL.

In 1935, Marty Fiedler launched 2 LA women’s softball leagues (American & National), playing at Fiedler Field, Sunset Field & Fairfax Stadium, parks he built. The sport exploded locally & gained national magazine coverage. Overlooked SoCal softball history.
Happy World Softball Day!
From 1944–1954, the National Girls Softball League/National Girls Baseball League proved that women’s professional fastpitch 🥎 could draw big crowds in Chicagoland while competing with the AAGPBL for talent.

The original NGBL logo, reimagined through the colors of the league’s teams. I created these variations using primary uniforms from different National Girls Baseball League clubs. Not all teams are shown, as some uniform colors remain unverified. #theirturnatbat
Given how much material survives, it’s surprising the National Girls Baseball League faded from public memory despite its official publication & player 8x10s available by mail. The NGBL may be one of the most well-documented forgotten leagues in sports history… #theirturnatbat
Today is “Yvonne Coker Day” honoring Yvonne “Coky” Coker & the anniversary of her 1st official ⚾️ game in the American Girls Baseball Conference in 1949. Coker became the 1st African American woman to play in a major women’s baseball league after the AGBC switched from 🥎 to ⚾️.
On this day 82 yrs ago, the National Girls Softball League — later renamed the National Girls Baseball League — held its Opening Night in Chicago & Forest Park.
The league showcased talented 🥎 stars from across North America but became a lost chapter of women’s sports history.
This Memorial Day, we honor & remember the brave men & women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice & courage will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

For #JewishAmericanHeritageMonth, we honor Blanche Schachter, a NY multi-sport athlete & standout in women’s ⚾️/🥎 history. A three-sport star at Hunter College, she played every position for the LI Jewels/Arthur Murray Girls, Astoria Starlets, Kenosha Comets, & Bronx Alpines.
For #JewishAmericanHeritageMonth, we honor Anne Goldstein, a #Chicago star in basketball and fastpitch #softball. In 1945, she joined Charles Bidwill’s Chicago Bluebirds of the National Girls Softball League, later the National Girls Baseball League. #theirturnatbat#ngbl
During #AANHPIHeritageMonth, we remember National Girls Baseball League stars Gwen Wong & Nancy Ito of the Parichy Bloomer Girls.
Chinese-American pitcher Wong helped lead the team to the ‘47 title, while Japanese-American SS Ito became one of the league’s top players in ‘53. 🥎
During #AANHPIHeritageMonth, we remember Chinese-American ballplayer Sue Mae Lee of the Huntington Manorettes in the integrated NY-based American Girls Baseball Conference (1945–1954).
Newspapers said Lee “hits a long ball and seldom strikes out.” ⚾ #baseball#womensbaseball
The American Girls Softball League began play 81 years ago today. Integrated from the start, the AGSL featured Marie Roach of Brooklyn — the first African American woman to play in the league — with the Greenwold/Long Island Jewels in 1945.
77 years ago today, the first American Girls Baseball Conference game was played as the Arthur Murray Girls faced the Stamford Nutmegs. After four softball seasons, the AGBC transitioned to #baseball in 1949, becoming the second major women’s diamond league to do so. ⚾️
On this day in 1944, the National Girls Softball League (later known as the National Girls Baseball League) was born. Based in Chicago, it featured some of the best women’s softball players of all time.
