OpenAI and Anthropic launched on the same day.
Prices fell. The charts got harder to compare:

On 22 September, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 and OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna.

What actually changed:

1. Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output.
↳ Opus 5 was $5 and $25. Anthropic says it costs 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads at default settings.

2. GPT-6 Sol costs $2 / $10. Luna costs $0.10 / $0.50.
↳ OpenAI says that's half the price of the 5.6 versions.

3. OpenAI says Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor.
↳ A claim worth testing on your own documents.

4. Both launch pages report OSWorld 2.0, a test of AI using a computer. Both include Claude Opus 5 as a comparison.
↳ Anthropic's table puts Opus 5 at 74.0%.
↳ OpenAI's puts it at 60.3%.

Same model, same benchmark name, almost 14 points apart.

The setups differ. OpenAI ran the "offline" version. Anthropic's column is marked "partial".

As a project manager, this is what I'd flag to my team:

A launch chart is made by the seller, with the seller's settings. Before you compare two vendors' numbers, read the small print under each chart. If the setups don't match, the comparison doesn't hold.
