Josh Howerton just delivered one of the clearest presentations of the Gospel I have heard in a long time.

On the Shawn Ryan Show, when asked why Jesus had to die on the cross if God could simply forgive, Howerton answered from Romans 3:26. God did it this way so He could be both just and the justifier of the ungodly. He then told the story of the just and loving king whose own daughter was the thief. The sentence had to stand. The king took the lashes himself. Payment was made. The guilty went free. Justice and love met in one act.

That is substitutionary atonement. That is the cross. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is exactly why I wrote Render Unto Caesar: Why Christians Must Engage Politics — and Why Jesus Already Did.

The same God who is both just and justifier does not call His people to privatize the Gospel. Jesus engaged the political and cultural authorities of His day. He spoke truth to power. He did not retreat into silence.

Pastors who treat cultural engagement as optional or “too political” are not following the pattern of Scripture. Staying silent is not an option. The Gospel that justifies the ungodly also calls the justified to live righteously in every sphere, including the public square.
