Some scholarship explains the world. The most powerful scholarship unsettles it.

As part of our Women’s Month celebration, Meet the Mind turns the spotlight to Prof Peliwe Mnguni, whose scholarship interrogates women’s lived experiences of leadership, power and organisational life.

For Prof Mnguni, scholarship cannot simply confirm what society already accepts. It must challenge taken-for-granted narratives and contribute to healthier organisations and a more humane society.

The conversation became even more powerful as the floor opened to the voices of women, young people and persons with disabilities.

One of the evening’s most pressing questions came from a recent UNISA PhD graduate with a disability: what happens after graduation?

Her contribution challenged institutions, government and industry to build stronger pathways from university into meaningful sustainable employment, moving beyond short-term learnerships towards decent work, dignity and economic independence.

In his closing address, the Executive Dean, Prof Walter Matli, reflected on the responsibility of academics to shape what comes next in teaching and learning.

“Technology may change how we teach and how students learn, but our responsibility remains constant, to develop critical thinkers, uphold academic integrity and ensure that innovation serves a clear educational purpose. The future of teaching and learning will be shaped not by technology alone, but by the choices we make about how we use it.”

In her welcoming address, Prof Ophillia Ledimo, Academic Director at Unisa SBL, reflected on the responsibility that comes with embracing AI in teaching and learning.

“Artificial intelligence presents extraordinary possibilities for teaching and learning, but it must never replace the intellectual work that defines scholarship. Used without integrity, AI can compromise not only an assessment, but an entire academic career. Our responsibility as academics is therefore greater than simply adopting new technologies. We must interrogate them, apply critical thinking, exercise sound academic judgement and ensure that innovation strengthens, rather than diminishes, the integrity and credibility of education.”

This Nelson Mandela Day, the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL), led by Executive Dean and CEO Professor Walter Matli and Academic Director Professor Ophillia Ledimo, partnered with African Child at Work to spend the morning with senior citizens from the Orlando East community, where leadership found expression through compassion, service and our common humanity.

Across many of our African communities, a blanket is more than protection from the winter cold. It is a quiet expression of care, respect and dignity.

It was in this spirit that the SBL team presented each senior citizen with a blanket. In that simple gesture, each blanket became a small but meaningful tribute to the men and women who continue to embody the wisdom, resilience and values that have shaped our families and communities.

In that simple gesture, Ubuntu found quiet expression.

From strategy to sustainable impact.

Prof Ophillia Ledimo, Academic Director of the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership, formed part of the Unisa delegation to Indonesia for the Times Higher Education Conference, where she presented on “The value of embedding SDGs in university strategy: A focus on the past, present and future.”

Her presentation highlighted how Unisa is advancing sustainable knowledge transformation through its 10 Catalytic Niche Areas, with a focus on curriculum development, student support, research that speaks to Africa’s intellectual future, and engaged scholarship that responds meaningfully to societal challenges.

Through this presentation, Prof Ledimo represented Unisa with distinction on a global platform, contributing to an important conversation on how universities can translate the SDGs from strategic intent into meaningful impact through teaching, research and engaged scholarship.
