8/ It's not complicated—women should be able to make decisions about their bodies, unencumbered by the uneducated, mostly male political ruling class. But the ways companies get involved? That's at least a little complicated. I covered it in more depth on my YouTube. Link in bio!
7/ Wading into political issues has long been a fear for corporations—but staying silent right now when (per Gallup) only 32% of Americans were in favor of overturning Roe just a year ago? That's a big old red flag to me, and certainly to other potential employees & consumers.
6/ So why the silence here? As with most problems, this one can be traced back to FL Gov. Ron DeSantis. Remember when he revoked Disney's special tax district because Disney (finally) spoke out against the Don't Say Gay legislation? Yeah, so does the rest of corporate America.
5/ That makes it a bit...shocking? that so few brands have offered to use their power & influence to move the needle here. Among the brands that *have* spoken out:
-Amazon
-Apple
-Citigroup
-Yelp
-Levi’s
-Match
...and that's kinda it.
4/ From @qz:
-In a study of nearly 1,000 American women who sought abortions, 40% cited financial reasons as a factor in their decision.
-Limiting abortion access disproportionately impacts lower-income workers—a category in which Black and Hispanic women are overrepresented.
3/ So from a labor POV, you'd think The Brands™️ might chime in, right? Pair that with their post-June 2020 commitments to racial & gender equality and their silence is even more deafening...because the issue of abortion is inherently a gender and racial equality issue.
2/ Those who were unable to get abortions when they needed them were less likely to be employed full-time 6 months after they were denied care, per a 2018 paper in the American Journal of Public Health.
Translation: When women can’t get the care they need, the workforce suffers.
1/ Overturning Roe is a crisis with enormous *human* consequences. But often corporate America only speaks in corporate terms…so let’s put it in corporate terms: Women constitute over half the U.S. workforce.
Why have The Brands™️ been so quiet on the potential overturn of Roe vs. Wade, even after all their promises of equality and fairness and goodness over the last two years? Let's talk about it -->
is Coachella about the music anymore? or is it an excuse for influencers to buy nonsensical wear-once outfits just to post *the shot* on their feed? ALSO, harry styles???
just posted an interview with the incredible @RuncieDan covering all of the above on my youtube. watch!!!!
that's one of the biggest learnings from my interview with Mark, published today on my YouTube. we also talked about...
-success
-handouts vs. investments
-hustle culture
-running for office
& a whole lot more!! find the full interview in all its @mcuban glory on my channel!
it restores autonomy in a world that is riddled with systemic unfairness. it's imperfect, absolutely, but this thinking inspired by @mcuban has made me more optimistic that there's still hope for redefining & re-engineering the American dream to work more for more Americans 5/
where you're born, who your parents are, what your school is like...they impact your chances at success (can confirm, statistically & anecdotally). but perhaps the only limiting factor on your curiosity—to ask what else is out there—is your effort. that's a comfort to me, tbh 4/
focusing on curiosity helps us start to answer the biggest question of the American dream's viability: circumstance. what's possible for one isn't for another, and usually not by choice. we know opportunity isn't universal...but curiosity is, as far as Mark is concerned 3/
to Mark, accomplishing the American dream doesn't mean making good on the grandeur you imagined for yourself as a child but rather defining success on your own terms, over and over again. and the biggest means of achieving that success? staying curious 2/
for a concept so widely, almost universally, invoked...the American dream is actually pretty subjective. sure, we have some core tenets (freedom! comfort! ambition!) but at its root, the American dream is deeply personal. so what does it mean to a billionaire? I asked @mcuban 1/
