Imagine having your savings account depleted to pay for a couple days of energy. Some people received bills for over $10k, and the duly elected Republicans of Texas will bend over backwards to make sure their constituents pay up in full.
This is the GOP dream of deregulation.
Some Texans were slapped with thousand-dollar energy bills after the winter storms — and the lieutenant governor says they have no one to blame but themselves
We'll never return to the past, but that's not a bad thing. We can either organize to build a better future or let a desire to return to a nonexistent normal continue to give power to those that have consistently ignored the many crises we face.

George Floyd was murdered by police in broad daylight, and those 4 complicit men are walking free right now. Tear gas, rubber bullets, and riot gear will not end the protests. Only justice will.
I’ll just say it: a lot of politicians are scared of the political power of the police, and that’s why changes to hold them accountable for flagrant killings don’t happen. That in itself is a scary problem.
We shouldn’t be intimidated out of holding people accountable for murder.
Today, I am sad to announce we will be suspending our campaign for Congress. I want to thank everyone who has supported my campaign thus far. Know that though the campaign is over, the fight continues, and I will continue the march towards a more progressive future.
@santiagomayer_ It seems like right wing voters often care more about 'owning the libs' than policy positions. This bizarre tactic won't bring moderate or progressive voters to her, but there is a possibility some disillusioned Trump voters will go for her. That's fine by me.
This is crony capitalism, and it costs lives. Our government can't accomplish some of the most basic crisis response functions because it's been hollowed out and offered to corrupt businesses that are willing to profit off suffering.

@DerekCressman Each individual essential worker laboring during the pandemic for minimum wage provides more to the economy than Steve Mnuchin and his ilk ever have.
@SenWarren It disturbs me greatly that to convince our Congress to give even a pittance to the people during a crisis we also have to fork over billions to corporate giants with no strings attached. Thank you for making him say it, but this was oh so expected.
@nytimes It's funny how when you completely ignore housing, healthcare costs, and a completely gutted retirement system you can come to absurd conclusions about how well we're all doing. If people were properly compensated for their labor, income inequality would disappear. But we aren't.
Thank you @fastlerner for this exceedingly important report. Bright's testimony may just confirm most our suspicions, but it also shows how those that respond competently to this pandemic are being ousted in order to install those willing to parrot the president's lies.
In a heated hearing, Rick Bright, who filed a whistleblower complaint earlier this month, provided new details about a planned Trump administration program that would have made an unproven coronavirus treatment available without medical supervision. https://t.co/92u4BAf9Jt
I figured a lot of you would enjoy this dark humor. Our economy is completely broken, and it's been broken long before this pandemic showed us exactly how dysfunctional and fragile it is.
To earn a trillion dollars working full-time with no vacations at the current federal minimum wage, you'd need to become immortal, then go back in time to just before dinosaurs went extinct, and then work for 66,086,000 years straight.
@eldon_katz @Ashfallen0 Earn a trillion, sure, but you still wouldn't be a trillionaire. I mean, have you seen the cost of rent during the Paleogene era?
@thehill So did you have any intention of fact checking this statement? Simply repeating what a politician says is hardly journalism - and this is not the first time Trump has lied about this exact thing.
