That’s why we keep saying "Afrobeats to the world" messed up the Nigerian music industry. Back in the day, if your music was on mixtapes, radio, and blogs, you could brag all you wanted. But then a few people started paying radio stations to decide who got played and who didn’t. The ones with more money ended up buying the whole radio slot and flexing with every OAP.

Those who couldn’t afford it got shafted. Greedy OAPs would promise to play your song after you have paid them, but never did.

Those with the streetOT would pushed to blogs or Alaba mixtapes. If you were good enough, worked with a known producer, a quality album cover, press release, and a little cash, platforms like NotJustOk, Naijaloaded, or Tooxclusive could post you and that alone was bragging rights. Your music was online, the URL was there to share with friends, family, and even a rich uncle who might fund your studio time. That’s how you built your identity as an artist.

Nowadays, many artists don’t want to put in work. They’d rather sleep with someone for fame than wash plates for six months and invest that money in their music.

I see mugu artists every day paying influencers to add them to some ragebait comparison posts instead of hunting for actual investors in their careers.

If you perform on a platform like Glitch Africa, you might attract a show promoter, a label, or a better deal, or use the video to hustle and the performance stays online forever. But no, nowadays upcoming artists would rather pay money to influencers to put them in irrelevant comparisons post with other mugus. And then they stay online complaining.
