"It's my period's week. Should I come?"
Them: Nooo . Abeg ooo
Me: Are you scared you can't hold yourself? Does her visit always have to be attached with s*x?
Let's normalize se*ual relationship that's beyond s*x.
And they start blaming them when they become adult. Meanwhile, they've already brainwashed them. Listen, majority of irregularities today started from them. I can't blame them, they were brainwashed too.
One of the most fucked up things they did to us as children was referring to our own language as "vernacular" in a derogatory tone.
I hope they have stopped doing that shit.
Also we need to understand that most times migrants' changes in diaspora spaces often come as a result of the act of "Becoming" and this "Becoming" according to Hall (1990) encompasses challenges like "clash of culture" and even eradication which they often "negotiate".
This thing Flora is doing and saying to Temi is the reality that many diaspora kids know all too well. As someone raising a daughter abroad, I sometimes worry that her Nigerian identity might be questioned one day too.
So many of these children are told they're not fully accepted abroad because they're Nigerian, only to come home and be told they're not Nigerian enough because they were raised elsewhere. It's a painful experience that can leave them feeling like they don't fully belong anywhere.
Living in the diaspora doesn't take away the Naija spirit from someone. Identity is more than an accent, where you went to school, or the country you grew up in. Many of these children carry Nigeria proudly in their hearts, embrace the culture, celebrate our traditions, and remain deeply connected to their roots.
What makes it even sadder is that after facing bullying, stereotypes, and exclusion abroad, some still have to fight for acceptance among their own people. We should be embracing them, not questioning their identity.
I hope we can choose unity above everything else and remember that there are many ways to be Nigerian. Nigeria belongs to all of us, whether we were raised in Lagos, London, Texas or anywhere ..
The thing is, it's from both sides. The way some people that live abroad shade their own Nigerians that's how some Nigerians that live in Nigeria shade them too. It's not a sided argument. If we tickle the armpit of its origin, these diasporas started it. Both are wrong.
