The 2006 decision to introduce Maths Literacy as a parallel subject was taken with good intentions.
The outcome has been damaging. In the matric class of 2025, enrolment in Maths Lit has grown to more than 420,000 while Maths enrolment sits below 270,000.

I warmly congratulate the US & Iran for having reached a peace deal that provides for an immediate & permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a framework for further negotiations. This represents a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
My deep appreciation goes to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and other regional countries, for the constructive role played in supporting the negotiations that led to the peace deal.

South Africa overtakes Spain as world's top citrus exporter. Trump's tariffs failed to halt the growth of SA's citrus exports.

South Africa’s 🇿🇦 Porsche Centre Johannesburg is the world’s largest Porsche dealership. The facility includes vehicle sales, servicing, advanced body repair and painting facilities, as well as large showrooms, service bays, and a dedicated training centre.
Here's another classic case of South Africans' short memory. The lady used to advise President on economy. She has since misplaced her PhD certificate. Looking searching for it.....
i saw a mouse with an X-shaped battery compartment.
first thought: this is stupid - who designed it?
5 seconds later: oh.
10 seconds later: OHHH!
the X slot fits an AA or an AAA battery - whichever you've got lying around.
the part most people miss is that the shape also makes it physically impossible to load both at once.
there is no warning label, no instructions and no way to screw it up.
the geometry does the thinking for you.
japanese has a word for this.
poka-yoke = "mistake-proofing."
the product refuses your stupidity before you can offer it.
i wish more things worked like this.
The delegation from the Nigerian National Assembly will be visiting South Africa. The aim is to engage with South African lawmakers on the current tension that has been sparked by the ongoing protests against undocumented foreign nationals . #sabcnews
This is actually a very good step.
A British university has cancelled undergrad degrees in English literature, philosophy, and creative writing.
One of the problems with these degrees is that they teach no practical skills to students, skills that enable you to get a job and put food on the table.
You get a creative writing degree and then what? Who is going to employ you as a novelist or a poet?
The other, and more important thing, is that these degrees end up wasting valuable human potential and material resources.
For example, the UK has a chronic shortage of doctors. But instead of encouraging young people to take up medicine, these degrees distract them.
The country needs surgeons and young people are spending their prime years scanning 15th century poems and writing angsty novels that no one will ever read.
English literature degrees in British univerisities are especially useless because they have a narrow understanding of "English literature." It's the same Shakespeare and Spencer over and over again.
If you actually want to become a novelist, go and live your life, do things, travel, fall in love, make money so you will have something to say of your own.
Then you can always read a couple of novels on your own, see how it's done, and write yours. That's what it takes.
You absolutely don't need an undergrad degree to learn how to write a novel.
JUST IN: The Mineral and Petroleum Ministry has admitting that it made an error during the calculation of fuel prices for May…
“The additional 93.00 cents per litre reduction in the fuel levy on diesel was erroneously captured as 0.93 cents per litre. This resulted in a higher increase in the wholesale price of R6,19 per litre instead of
R5,27 per litre for diesel”
See full statement below ⬇️
“Recruiters have recorded an increase in enquiries from South Africans wanting to leave the US, and 12,000 people around the world have registered to reclaim their citizenship on a portal launched by the South African government…”
