European Commission Proposes Restrictions on Russian Fish Product Imports

The European Commission has proposed introducing restrictions on the import of several types of Russian fish products, including a total ban on cod supplies, as part of a new sanctions package against Russia. The announcement was made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to von der Leyen, the fisheries sector remains one of the few major segments of the Russian economy that has not yet been fully impacted by sanctions.

The potential implementation of import restrictions on Russian fish into the European Union was first reported back in 2024. In March 2025, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization warned that a complete ban could lead to shortages of certain fish products within EU countries.
