Being in your mid- to late-20s in ministry is a weird time. The college students you disciple think you are ancient and your congregation thinks you’re so young. I now see why Paul had to become all things to all people (I’m exegeting that right, right?)
When I was a child, I thought like a child and thought the cherries were the best part of a fruit cocktail. But now that I am a man, I know that the grapes are the best part. You just can’t get them like that off the vine.
Hey @MadisonPierce, thought you might like to know that the Final Jeopardy question today was “Which of Paul’s letters contains the most quotations from the OT?” The answer, of course, Hebrews. Jeopardy has definitively solved the authorship problem.
In case you were thinking about having your productive small group meeting at your house on Halloween night, please learn a lesson from me. It’s not happening.
@JamesArcadi This seems to be a common thread for many pastors. @josephmljr has also taken on this role. Seminaries should definitely offer a course in this.
Pastors: what other proficiencies have you had to learn “on the job” that seminary never prepared you for because they’re so obscure? In 1 year of pastoral ministry, I’ve effectively become an amateur locksmith, safety marshal, legal liaison, and sound engineer.
“A person is not a disciple of Christ on the basis of ancestry, ritual act, or liturgical confession. One is a disciple in actually following Jesus’ compassion and obedience to the will of the Father.”
Klyne Snodgrass also rocked me every time I read his stuff. “A person cannot be a follower of Jesus and be void of compassion, which is at the heart of his gospel. Why have so many Christians thought we could have the grace without the demand?” 😮💨 I need to sit down.
Officiated my first wedding tonight. Forgot to turn on my mic at the beginning, got thrown off and then asked “who gives this man away to this woman?” as I stared at the bride and her father 🤦🏻♂️ at least it relaxed everyone and calmed their nerves from the start.
