It is a racist enterprise to try wiggling our way to racial equity by ignoring racism & embracing strategies to “fix” students targeted by racism. Still, at the institutional level, "eliminate racism" remains an unpopular remedy while "fix students of color" grows in popularity.
@L_A_Malone And that is exactly the experience my children frequently have, and then, feeling bad about "food" waste, I eat it. Mistake definitely made😜
P-T conference for my 7 y.o. tonight. She was prompted to write about what she likes about fall. She wrote this. I'm simultaneously mortified and proud. #isuenged
I'm so distracted tonight. My 15 y.o. son asked me to buy "Turtles All the Way Down" for him, and it's taunting me from the dining room table. He wants us to read it together.. I'm dying of curiosity! #isuenged
For some reason, I thought of the song Broken by Lifehouse when I was reading Eleanor and Park--especially when Eleanor started crying on the phone. https://t.co/kilyvZ6ZJF #isuenged
A6: I'm not sure that this really answers the question, but I wonder about working with students to analyze school policies, procedures and language in "official" communications about dress codes, dances/parties, PDA, PE, etc #isuenged#comicschat
A5: I'm struggling to answer this question because I need help processing the nuances of queer theory, heteronormativity, and the ways we teach about sexuality in schools #isuenged#comicschat
A4: I guess the most obvious relation to queer theory was that the book was an autobiography that centered largely around Alison's coming out and the juxtaposition to the way her father lived #isuenged#comicschat
A7: Modeling the whole, messy, sometimes ugly process of writing is extremely valuable to developing a sense that quality writing doesn't just magically happen, it's a process #engsschat#isuenged
Q5: I find it useful to build toward deeper reflection over time. We'll start out with quick writes on sticky notes or with sentence frames as we're reading. Then we move toward more sustained reflective journals as students build stamina #engsschat#isuenged
A4: I tend to be somewhat limited in collaboration as a multi-grade literacy specialist, but I try to incorporate assignments and themes from gen ed classes whenever possible #engsschat#isuenged
A3: We tend to focus on narrative and persuasive writing through letters to the editor, blog posts, and brief sequels for books we've read #engsschat#isuenged
A2: I like to have students use writing to "talk back" to authors through letters, reflective essays, critiques/reviews, or spin off texts #engsschat#isuenged
Welcome to #engsschat! Thanks for joining us tonight. In honor of National Novel Writing Month (November), we're talking "Writing to Learn" in the classroom. Please take a moment to introduce your self, what you teach, etc. #engchat#sschat#edchat#elachat
