FACT CHECK: Trump's claim is false. is historically false.

Donald Trump has claimed that the United States "gave Greenland back to Denmark" after World War II.

Greenland was Danish territory before, during, and after World War II. The United States defended Greenland under a 1941 agreement while Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, but the U.S. never acquired sovereignty over Greenland.

You cannot "give back" something you never owned.

After the war, Greenland remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1946, the United States even offered to buy Greenland from Denmark—an offer that Denmark rejected.

Bottom line:
The historical record is clear: the United States defended Greenland during the war but never owned it. Therefore, Trump's claim that America "gave Greenland back to Denmark" is false.
