Many know Ferrero Rocher for its popular hazelnut chocolates, but the company’s tie to Our Lady of Lourdes is lesser known.

Michele Ferrero, the company’s founder and a devout Catholic, had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and wanted to honor her through his work. It is reported that he named his company “Rocher” after the rock grotto, the Rocher de Massabielle, which marks the location where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France.

In fact, “rocher” means “rock” in French. With this in mind, many point to the chocolate’s crunchy coating and uneven gold wrapping as Ferrero’s attempt to resemble this rock formation at Lourdes, which had a special meaning to the chocolatier.

At the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company, Ferrero said: “The success of Ferrero we owe to Our Lady of Lourdes; without her we can do little.”

In an interview with CNA’s Spanish-language news partner, ACI Prensa, in 2023, Father Mauricio Elias, a chaplain at the Sanctuary of Lourdes, said: “Mr. Ferrero had a lot of devotion to the Virgin of Lourdes; he came a lot to Lourdes and was a benefactor.”

“He was a man who always came here, he had a lot of devotion to the Virgin, he confessed, he led a Christian life,” Elias added.

It was said that Ferrero made annual pilgrimages to Lourdes and also organized a visit for his employees. He also had a statue of the Virgin Mary in each of his company’s 14 production facilities around the world.

Ferrero passed away on Feb. 14, 2015, at the age of 89. Shortly before his death, a flood damaged the sanctuary at Lourdes. Ferrero promised “a great donation to recover what was lost,” Elias shared. After his death, his children kept their father’s promise and helped with the repairs.

The family-run business continues its tradition with Michele’s son, Giovanni Ferrero, running the company today. Founded in 1946 in Alba, Italy, by Pietro Ferrero, Michele’s father, today Ferrero Rocher is the third-largest chocolate producer in the world. Since its launch in other European countries in 1982, the company has expanded to include other brands such as Nutella, Tic Tac, and Kinder, among others.

The "Grunt Padre", the heroic priest of Vietnam.

Father Vincent Capodanno was a Navy Chaplain in Vietnam. The Marines called him the "Grunt Padre" because he lived in the mud with them.

During a massive ambush in 1967, heavily outnumbered, Fr. Capodanno refused to evacuate. He ran toward the machine gun fire. Wounded three times, his hand nearly severed, he continued dragging Marines to safety and giving Last Rites to the dying.

He used his own body to shield a wounded corpsman from a machine gun burst, dying instantly. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Michael Bublé beautifully sang Schubert's Ave Maria at a Holy See press conference before his performance for Pope Leo.

In a viral video published by EWTN Vatican, Bublé provided a preview of his upcoming performance on December 6 for the sixth Vatican Concert with the Poor.

Bublé referred to the spontaneous performance as “a little rehearsal before he has to go out and sing.”

During the press conference, Vatican News reported Bublé’s comments regarding his love for music and how it connects him to God. The Canadian singer believes “music is a gift from God.”

“When I hear music, I hear the voice of God,” Bublé, who is a “lifelong Catholic,” told reporters.“I get to spread the good Word, and the fact that it’s a concert with people that could be suffering…suffering brings you closer to God.”

Bublé also said he considers performing at the Concert for the Poor “an honor,” because his Catholic faith is such an important aspect of his life.

“It’s a beautiful part of my life,” Bublé said. “There’s something beautiful about knowing that you’re a part of spreading [the faith].

In an additional interview with EWTN Vatican, Michael Bublé elaborated on his desire to share his Catholic faith with the world. He hopes young people will look to him as a courageous example.

“When you say you have strong faith, this is shocking to people. Which, sometimes, for me, it’s hard to understand. I just very much want to be able to do these things. But with the platform I have, my hope is that people see me and that there’s a young person who might listen to me today and who might be afraid to share their faith–to be open about it. And they look at me, and they say, ‘Wow, look at Bublé.’ He’s not afraid to share it. And maybe it will give them the strength to do the same.”

🇩🇪 | Una bebé nacida en el Hospital Universitario de Magdeburgo, Alemania, protagonizó un milagro. La pequeña, cuyo nombre aún no se ha revelado, nació 16 semanas prematura y pesó tan solo 300 gramos. Es una niña.

La bebé logró sobrevivir, a pesar de que los médicos dicen que la probabilidad de supervivencia para un bebé nacido tan prematuro es solo del 25 por ciento en todo el mundo.

Estuvo conectada a un respirador durante casi dos meses. Sus padres permanecieron a su lado todo el tiempo para mantener el contacto y brindarle consuelo.

Después de siete semanas comenzó a respirar por sí sola y, dos semanas después, le dieron el alta.
