For those who want to make a meaningful change in the world, this is an unusually ripe moment. The standards governing much of modern art have thinned. Rather than seeing this as a tragedy, Catholic artists can view this as an opening. When excellence is no longer demanded, the field is suddenly wide open to those willing to pursue it.
St. Thomas Aquinas reminds us that beauty is not arbitrary. It flows from truth, integrity, and right proportion. These things have not disappeared simply because they are unfashionable. They remain, waiting to be expressed.
Rather than lament the poverty of contemporary taste, we can answer it. We can create work ordered toward the good, illuminated by truth, and marked by real beauty - and do so with fewer obstacles than at almost any other time. This is not the age to withdraw in despair, but to build with confidence, trusting that what is truly beautiful will capture minds and hearts.

In the Holy Family, we see perfect proportion: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in unified love, arranged around the center, Jesus. As Thomistic artists, we create works that reflect this divine balance to draw souls upward. #ThomisticArt#HolyFamilyMonth#CatholicBeauty
“The Way of Divine Beauty is a laborious ascent. There is no shortcut to the highest stair. We must first learn the beauty of the physical world, including the beauty of men in action, men pursuing wholeness, before we can ascend to the Beauty that utterly transcends the realm of human action. That….is the real adventure.”

Modern art asks: What do I feel?
Thomistic art asks: What is the truth about this?
As McInerny notes, imitation trains perception. Artists are in a lifelong process of learning to see the reality as it truly is.
What is Thomistic art?
Thomistic art is not self-expression.
It is imitation ordered to truth.
Beauty arises when form is faithfully received and expressed.
“God is an artist, and the universe is his work of art.”

“Art is imitation, the making of a picture of some feature of the world; art thus images, or re-presents, for our delighted contemplation, one or more formal aspects of its source or origin.”
