@Jenni_Gregory4@SJPfiction Completely agree, Jennifer - I have enjoyed many a Poirot and a Miss Marple (Joan Hickson another piece of perfect casting), but I''m about Poiroted and Marpled out now. And yes, Sara reminded me that E Petherbridge was the actor I was thinking of.
@SJPfiction@Jenni_Gregory4 Edward Petherbridge - that's the one. I think I also recall him playing Newmann Noggs in that fab dramatisation of Nicholas Nickleby by RSC, broadcast by the then new Channel 4 (around the same time). The late Roger Rees played Nicholas and David Threlfall stole the show as Smike
@SJPfiction@Jenni_Gregory4 I have a vague recollection of Harriet Walters playing Harriet Vane and that lovely actor whose name escapes me playing LPW - I might have chanced on one episode. Were they well-cast, in your opinion? (Two fine actors.)
@MelanieHewitt61@Jenni_Gregory4 Completely agree, Melanie. I am of similar vintage to Adrian and have read quite a few books over the years; I'm not sure there are any I have loved and admired as much as these diaries.
@lizfilleul@juliedg@Jenni_Gregory4 Are we talking about my WIP, Liz? If so, I think it might be what seems to be called a bildungsroman, covering a long stretch of the MC's life, with lessons learned along the way. (I've probably spelt that wrongly.) I oscillate between feeling excited and deflated - genuinely.
@SJPfiction@Jenni_Gregory4 I have a longstanding intention to read DL Sayers as I suspect I would love her stories, but this just hasn't quite made it to the top of my reading list yet.
@Jenni_Gregory4@GilesAuthor Getting rid of Nigel made no sense to me, and he has never been 'replaced' (as if that were possible). Don't know what they were thinking.
@GilesAuthor@Jenni_Gregory4 This sounds very challenging, Amanda, but with the potential to be very rewarding, too. Best wishes with this tricky project.
@Jenni_Gregory4 Excellent questions, Jenni! That hour just flew. Thanks for hosting. Wishing everybody a fine and productive week ahead. See you all next time.
@juliedg@Jenni_Gregory4 Yes, it's sometimes disarming when boys just say what they're thinking. My middle son, in particular, who is by no means deliberately provocative, sometimes seems to speak up completely without inhibition.
@SJPfiction@Jenni_Gregory4 Perhaps we should make a pact, that with every milestone story we have accepted (tenth; twenty-fifth, fiftieth etc) we buy something we don't need but really want.
@juliedg@Jenni_Gregory4 That's a lovely story, Julie. I quickly opened a special account just for writing money, too - not as romantic a scenario as yours, but I wanted to keep everything straightforward for HMRC purposes.
