As a teacher/parent it is prudent to hear all sides and investigate when it comes to clip systems and sticker charts but many clampdown on these systems bc they are so afraid to let them go. They don't know another way and this is what they learned in school! I have another way!
Behavior is a symptom of a problem. Ask yourself, "What is the problem?" Then chase the WHY! Be the Sherlock Holmes of behavior. And once you've caught the WHY, surround it with L❤VE. Be the Sherlock Holmes that chooses L❤VE to solve every case!
Just so you all know....
Getting paid for your job as an adult isn't the same as external motivation for children. Please stop making the comparison. The 2 HUGE differences are CHOICE and POWER!
May this conversation never have to happen again!❤❤
These are NOT behavior managment strategies...
*Class dojo points
*Clip down systems
*Sticker charts
*Gold, silver & bronze clips
*Getting tickets to lose recess
*Cutting squares off a strip of paper when you "misbehave"
*coloring happy & sad faces
*Signing behavior sheets
"My son's school disciplines by using a ticket method. You pull a ticket for certain things, if the homework is not done, if you're not wearing a belt or tennis shoes for p.e., not doing what you're told the first time, moving too much..."
Is this a thing? It hurts my heart!😥
I wonder if we call special need 'special' because the children that rock those needs are beyond special! If that's the case, I am now calling 'special needs' AMAZING needs! Why stop at special! What will you call them? ❤❤
Find the place you belong & then rock that place, dance until you are short on breath, celebrate your arrival & then take a nap! Find the good, hang out in the hard, & then rest! ❤
And when that place is OUTSIDE THE BOX, know that there are many of us out here soaking up life!
My son was playing outside with a friend and asked to go inside. I said we had to ask his friend's dad. When we went to knock on the door his friend came out and said, "The Magic 8 Ball said he couldn't come in!"
Did anyone else know there was a Magic 8 Ball Corona Edition? 😂😂
3 reasons to use love based behavior strategies
1. Emotional wellness is ALWAYS a must❤
2. Leading with FEAR seems scary EVERY time❤
3. The strategy outcomes aren't predictable but knowing you won't emotionally hurt a child is ALWAYS important❤
The difference between external motivation for an adult and a child goes something like this.....
*I choose to participate❤
*I hold some of the power❤
*It makes me happy❤
*I am actively teaching myself new skills❤
Video coming tonight at 6pm. Stay tuned!!
You are only a teacher if a student is present...otherwise you are merely a bigger human standing in a room of "smaller" humans holding ALL the power. Don't be a warden, be a teacher! Share power❤Seek relationships❤Self-reflect❤Break free from the traditional❤Choose LOVE ❤
A teacher messaged me yesterday to tell me that their school district's PTO used hundreds of dollars to buy rewards & incentives for a cirriculum called 'Choose Love' that doesn't even have a reward component! It makes me wonder if adults only think children can learn w/ prizes😥
What if our best behavior strategies were skills, needs, time, patience and relationships! What if we could all agree on that then, maybe, we can throw the sticker charts, token boards and clip systems in the trash. More LOVE and less FEAR! I would LOVE no FEAR! Let's do it! ❤❤
Sometimes a child's struggle with adjustment is like folding your hands wrong....but sometimes it's like folding your arms wrong! Try it! It is REALLY tricky! Video coming soon!!!!❤❤
Remember it takes 2 to tango...and to fight, disagree, or when it comes to challenging behaviors. Own your piece, self-reflect, make it better if you can and learn from your mistakes! Hard (intrapersonal and interpersonal) work can only better your tango!💃💃❤❤
Relationships are you greatest behavior strategy! Soooo.......
❤Accept rather than reject
❤Understand rather than judge
❤Participate rather than manipulate
Definitely relationship principles to LOVE by❤❤
Hey! This tweet goes out to all those peeps without challenging behaviors... who are totally regulated in times of struggle!
Hello? Heeelllooo? Anyone there? Anyone?
Remember that we ALL struggle, we ALL have hard behavior at times & we will ALL die dysregulated in something!
Logical consequences have to be....
1. Reasonable
2. Related
3. Respectful
I probably get the most questions around consequences because the 3 R's are tricky to meet in the moment! I'm here if you need me!!!!
A NEED is something that must be met to reach our fullest potential. With school starting, let's remember a child's growth needs:
1. Physiological needs
2. Physical and emotional safety needs
3. Love and belonging needs (relationships and environments)
4. Self esteem needs
