Sometimes the calm partner is actually shut down.

They seem laid back, easy going, and always in control of their emotions.

But in reality, they're just as dysregulated as someone who's highly reactive.

They're in a full shut down state.

They avoid any difficult conversations, refuse to talk about issues, and sometimes even label their partners as too sensitive or too uptight if they push to work things out.

Just because someone appears calm doesn't mean they're in a healthy space.

They can leave their partners feeling completely unheard or believing that they're going crazy.

Dysregulation can also look like dissociation.

Derek doesn’t tell Meredith he’s married when they start a relationship. He’s unsure of who he will choose so she tries to fight for the relationship asking him to ‘choose me, pick me.” She professes her love telling him she would pretend to have the same taste in music or give him the last slice of cheesecake. We’ve been conditioned to see love as self betrayal. The goal is to be chosen, not to emotionally connect with someone in a safe and mature relationship.
