I watch lots of films. Most of them are good. Some aren’t. They come in many shapes and sizes though (not literally, they all come in similar sized cases).
These are only my opinions. Other opinions may vary, and are equally as valid. Unless someone starts slagging off Hard Target. Those people are just plain wrong.
Cut Throat City (2020): Four friends desperate after hurricane Katrina devastates their home city carry out a heist for a local crime boss. Shit escalates. Firmly on the side of socially conscious hip hop as opposed to the braggadocio of gangster rap, with a magnificent cast.
Mortal Kombat (2021): An MMA fighter is head hunted by a group taking part in a fighting contest that could decide the fate of the earth. For a film based on a fairly simple video game this is quite a decent effort made with some top talent. Mostly a set up for a sequel though.
Soldier Blue (1970): A cavalry unit transporting a woman to a fort is attacked by a Cheyenne war party. The woman and lone curving soldier try to reach the intended destination. Almost a rom com till the final segment which is unbelievably horrific. Very much anti war. Good film.
Incendies (2010): After the death of their mother in Canada, two twins are tasked with finding their father and the brother they don’t knew existed. Extremely harrowing from the start, with one scene in particular being almost unwatchable. An outstanding cinematic achievement.
Texas, Adios (1966): A lawman and his younger brother travel over the border to Mexico to apprehend their father’s killer. A decent spaghetti western that mostly stands out for a huge twist in the middle. Some great stunts though.
Avatar (2009): A wheelchair bound former marine is sent to an alien planet to inhabit a fake alien body and make contact with the locals. The basic story has been done before but never quite on this scale. With Cameron directing the action scenes are reliably incredible.
The Incredibles (2004): A retired superhero is brought back to work by a mysterious benefactor, in a world where superheroes are now outlawed. Beautifully stylized animation, a great script and tremendous action sequences make this one of Pixar’s best films. Outrageously good.
Sisu (2022): A former Finnish special forces guy finds some gold as the Nazis are retreating at the end of WW2. He ends up having to fight them. Super violent and super entertaining. Several great action scenes and some very fiendish Nazis getting a right sorting out. Top film.
The Return of Ringo (1965): Ringo gets back from fighting in the civil war to find that his wife has been nabbed by a Mexican bandit who also controls the town. Has a lot in common with the previous film, including most of the cast but as different characters. Standard western.
A Pistol for Ringo (1965): A gunfighter is recruited to help out with a hostage situation at a ranch. He infiltrates the gang of bandits to this end. A decent western with quite a charming lead and some pretty unpleasant villains.
Tomorrowland: A World Beyond (2015): A robot from the future hires promising young people to try and prevent a potential apocalypse. Very complex plot for a film based on a theme park ride, but it actually works thanks to a great director, production design and cast.
The Last Kumite (2024): A chap is forced into a dangerous fighting contest when his daughter is kidnapped by the guy running it. Made with a love for 80s kumite films and has a couple of stars from them in Rothrock and Blanks, but doesn’t do anything new and the acting is dire.
Nobody 2 (2025): Hutch takes his family on holiday to a resort he visited as a kid. He gets embroiled in the local crime scene and things escalate. Not quite on a par with the first one but some outstanding action scenes thanks to a director who specializes in those. A lot of fun
Nobody (2021): A mild mannered man goes on a bit of a rampage after his house is burgled. He ends up fighting the Russian mob. And he has skills. Great cast and excellent action scenes. Has a sense of humour that kind of exaggerates the brutality of the violence. Really good film
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Death Threat (1991): An assassin is tricked into infiltrating a prison only to become trapped there. Not as wild as some of the earlier incarnations of this series, but crazier than your average prison film. Quite a satisfying tale of vengeance.
The Green Knight (2021): A mysterious knight that looks like a tree lays down a challenge. The chap who picks it up embarks on a strange journey. Visually stunning and often surreal retelling of an English myth. Outstanding work all round.
One Battle After Another (2025): A former revolutionary and his daughter flee a maniacal white supremacist who thinks the daughter may be his. Tremendous film with cracking performances all round, a fantastic score and a lot of humour. Also boasts an all timer of a car chase.
F1 (2025): A struggling F1 team hires a maverick former driver to try and salvage something from the season. A well worn plot and a tenuous relationship to the rules of the sport, but by god the racing scenes are fantastic. Incredible sound and editing make this a top blockbuster
Burning Dog (1991): A gang plan to steal a load of cash from a US military base. They have a few trust issues though. Kind of slow but always engaging thanks to a great lead, and ultimately pretty bleak. Good film overall, just not a lot of fun.
Slade in Flame (1975): A band get together and become famous but are fought over by nefarious managers. Not what you’d expect from a Slade film given that it’s incredibly bleak. Shows the music business as being run by people who know or care nothing about music. Good songs like.
Northern Soul (2014): A young chap in Lancashire 1974 encounters the northern soul scene and falls in love with it. The plot has been done before but the music and club scenes are fantastic, and the period detail is pretty good too. Overall an entertaining affair.
