Cynicism seems to have thrived into the 4th Century A.D., unlike Stoicism, which had long declined by that time. It finally disappeared in the late 5th Century A.D., although many of its ascetic ideas and rhetorical methods were adopted by early Christians. 8/8
A thread on the #Cynics:
The Cynics were a philosophical school in Ancient Greece who believed in a shortcut to virtue through self-training and practice. Despite a lack of surviving texts, their lives and practices provide evidence of their ethos. #Greek#Philosophy 1/8
With the rise of Stoicism in the 3rd Century BC, Cynicism underwent a decline. It revived in Imperial Rome in the 1st Century AD, and Cynics could be found begging and preaching throughout the the Roman Empire, where they were treated with a mixture of scorn and respect. 7/8
Modern philosophers and educators still employ the patterns of thinking and exploration established by ancient Greek philosophers, such as the application of logic to questions of thought and engaging in debate to better convey philosophical ideas.
Ancient #Greek#philosophers can be categorized into three groups:
- The Pre-Socratics
- The #Socratics
- The Post-Socratics
The pre-Socratics focused mainly on understanding the world around, the universe. With Socrates man became the main object of the philosophical thought.
The Post-Socratic philosophers established four schools of philosophy:
- #Cynicism
- #Skepticism
- #Epicureanism
- #stoicism
The Post-Socratic philosophers focused their attention on the individual rather than on communal issues such as politics.
