Malesela discredits Sundowns' 'fatigue' excuse, identifies real problems

Former Mamelodi Sundowns player and now coach Dan Malesela believes player fatigue should not be used as an excuse for inconsistent performances at the club.

Malesela's comments come as Mamelodi Sundowns face an anxious wait in the Betway Premiership title race after surrendering control of their destiny to Orlando Pirates.

Pirates now sit within touching distance of the league crown and could deny Sundowns a ninth straight title if they beat Orbit College in their final match of the season.

Sundowns' demanding schedule this campaign, which included another deep run in the CAF Champions League, has reignited debate around fixture congestion and player exhaustion.

Current coach Miguel Cardoso has been vocal, complaining that a heavy fixture schedule has killed his team's momentum.

But Malesela says South African players are not overworked compared to footballers in Europe and other major leagues.

"As for players being tired, I cannot relate to that argument," Malesela told SportsBoom.

"We are playing far fewer matches than leagues in other countries around the world, yet the same players are used repeatedly."

The former defender pointed out that the PSL features only 16 teams, meaning clubs play fewer league matches than most European competitions.

"We are a 16-team league playing four matches fewer than leagues in Europe, so are we saying we do not have the endurance?" he asked.

Malesela believes the real issue lies in squad rotation and game management rather than the fixture list itself.

"In our country, we exaggerate the issue of players being tired, and it becomes an excuse," he added.
