During the Boshin War, a veteran of the American Civil War served under the Imperial Banner.
He became infamous for his use of a stolen katana and stolen samurai armor he defaced with the colors of his home nation's flag.
His rivalry with Onna Musha known as Kaiya Himura, a former Shogunate Samurai turned Imperial Officer in the aftermath of the war, and his actions before, during and after the conflict would be notable, but his betrayal would be legendary.
Following the Boshin War, he would be placed on an assignment alongside his "former" rival to root out Shogunate, now Ezo Republican, holdouts. Following a raid into a "Shogunate" holdout, the American would be caught by surprise as both Shogunate, in reality disguised Imperials, and his fellow officers and most of his men turned their guns on him.
Those loyal to him, ranking only 30 soldiers, would battle the overwhelming force of 160. Kaiya Himura, wanting revenge for her father, the very Samurai whose sword and armor the American held, would expertly separate themselves from both Kaiya's and his men so that she could take him on personally.
The pair had battled before, one duel ending in a draw and another in her defeat, but this one would go differently. Within the now burning stronghold, she would ultimately defeat the American but be cut off by falling, burning debris as the fate of the American was left ambiguous in the inferno.
It would not be until the next morning, after the flames had long since died down, that the armor and blade of the American was recovered only three feet from the ashes of the compound. While the damaged armor was discarded haphazardly, the blade was rested along a crate. Whether he had simply forgotten the blade, or left it as a sign of respect to his rival, remains a mystery.
The American's ultimate fate would be unknown, his remains never being recovered and the knowledge of if he left the nation or not uncertain, and his real name would be forgotten. If it wasn't for his armor being displayed in a museum, or the famous painting depicting his battle against Kaiya, he might of even been relegated to myth.
But his nickname remained eternal.
A name that struck fear into his enemies.
A name that gave him begrudging respect by his former Japanese allies.
And a name that Kaiya would utter even in the time leading to her death with both venom and an equal amount of respect.
He was, he is, The American Rōnin.

@PhoenixAstra You mean you can just casually make an animated cauldron, and have a near perfect loop, and not make it an actual perfect loop?
Youre a madwoman.
@PhoenixAstra Ha. Haha. Hahaha! Hahahahahahaaaa!
You clown! You absolute fool!
Everyone is their own worst enemy, the single worst person they know.
Every bad thing you do just....rebounds inside and makes you feel worse and worse.
@BeyondBadger@mattdinniman If you pass on Wandering Inn, you're gonna regret it.
Solid storytelling, vast character growth through the entire cast of characters, and above all...a charismatic and sassy Innkeeper.
@PhoenixAstra Its almost like adding or subtracting and hour bi-yearly does more harm than good.
It fucks with our inner clocks.
But you're still going to bed too early like an old lady.
@DJSchinhofen@TravisBaldree did a solid job portraying the son of Alberet. Someone who didnt want to coast on his family's influence, but still learned from them.
Why switch narrators? Ive dropped books/stories because of a narrator switch a few times. Including @AuthMChatfield w/ 10 Realms
@DJSchinhofen
How much does it cost you per book, to have something narrated?
You've switched narrators twice, as far as I know.
Was it a cost thing? A prior obligation on their tallents? Did they not like the material?
I just want to know.
@DJSchinhofen Im not asking for the nitty-gritty, I just want to know why.
With Apocalypse Gates, 2 books in, @MouthyMaven stopped narrating and @TessIrondale took it on and did a fantastic job.
I just did a full re-listen, which is why I asked.
@PhoenixAstra You need sleep when you need sleep. Stop being such a basic bitch.
You're schedule is abnormal to normies. But its "normal" to you.
You do you. Figure your shit out, then get back to what is normal to you.
Like shit. You're old enough to know this.
